Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft files patents for Illumiroom

Seems pretty cool, but I too believe that the success of Oculus Rift-like hardware will prevent this technology from becoming a mainstream success.

Oculus Rift not only offers possibilities that improve the gaming experience much more, it will also probably be much cheaper and release earlier.

Do we know enough about how it works to know what type of price it would have?

Well it's obviously using projectors.

I'm not saying I think it would be cheaper than Oculus Rift, but Oculus Rift is targeting 300$ for launch day.  So if you were to buy 4, 1200$, while in comparison if the Illumiroom costs 1000$, it would be cheaper per person, if used by 4 people.  Presumeably depending on how it's used, it could be 1000 or way more for application.

Sure, but why should people buy more than one Oculus Rift? In practice, hardly anyone will.

This, and cheaper. Lmao at people who think this is going to be affordable

Well, I can't say for sure. Just look up the price of a 720 p projector. For a decent one they seem to hang around 800. Then you got to factor in how it projects on at least 5 surfaces. celling, 3 walls and the floor. So that’s going to raise the price, now factor in the x1 only has one hdmi out, sounds like you’re going to need a pass threw for that. Or it could send the info over wifi. Either way the price keeps climbing. But the good thing about the oculus is it displays on the TV as well as the goggles so other can see what’s going on. And its doubt full you could use more than one oculus on any system, maybe pc but the systems won’t be able to handle it.

I agree, but from the video it only seems to be one projector even though the diagram seems to go against that.   So it is possible that it could be 1000$+ rather than way way more.  Though I'd imagine at this point all of that is subject to change.

I have a hard time believing this will come out this gen, and by the time it does, cheaper and better options would be out there.

What has Oculus Rift has proven anyway? Both hardware are being optimized anyway as we speak.
Does anybody here have definitive data of both hardware to compare them?

I thought they had already patented this before..

EP1843581 (A3)  US2007247518 (A1)  JP2007295559 (A)  GB2436921 (A)  are all existing patents, originating from earlier works of the BBC
I hope MS gets their collective asses kicked for blatantly trying to steal once again...

well, microsoft works with projection mapping for much longer as those bbc patents are from.

using a tv in the middle and have projection mapping around it is not really something special.

but maybe you also think that we should have only one company producing smartphones because this company was the first which had the idea to have a display on the phone.

There doesn't seem to be a conflict, this new MS patent builds on possible implementations with Illumiroom like components, it's not patenting Illumiroom itself, it has more to do with live conference interaction.

20130201276
Techniques for implementing an integrative interactive space are described. In implementations, video cameras that are positioned to capture video at different locations are synchronized such that aspects of the different locations can be used to generate an integrated interactive space. The integrated interactive space can enable users at the different locations to interact, such as via video interaction, audio interaction, and so on. In at least some embodiments, techniques can be implemented to adjust an image of a participant during a video session such that the participant appears to maintain eye contact with other video session participants at other locations. Techniques can also be implemented to provide a virtual shared space that can enable users to interact with the space, and can also enable users to interact with one another and/or objects that are displayed in the virtual shared space.

What it could do for games is, with fortaleza glasses you can play a virtual board game online with the other people projected around the table. 3D strip UNO!

let the game and bet lobby get on board and we have the online poker (casino) game of the future that would be sick

totally different tech and I would take illumiroom and fortaleza combo over the rift on console gaming.... oculus rift is a great improvement on PC gaming.... not on a social gaming platform like the console... IMO of course

I don't think oculus rift will be that popular.... not because it is not good... but because only really tech savvy gamers have heard of it and have interest into it.... and they won't have the marketing and advertising budget companies like MS Sony and other tech company have....

plus more people would buy a console from a known brand and get something packed in with it than go out and buy an add on out of the blue.... this is exactly the Kinect problematic, as a stand alone even if it's really that good, niche tech devices like these are not gonna be picked up as much than if they are packed in with the device people actually want and/or need to buy....

if occulus rift makes a deal with constructors and comes packed in with devices or PCs then it will have a chance to really pick up fast otherwise I'm doubtful of its initial success...

It'll be very interesting, I wouldn't mind playing a fighting game on it, it would give me a nice work out.

That wouldn't work unfortunately.

Their plans are to use a coffee table projector for the final version, which would be kind of in the way.
In the current setup they have the projector mounted on a shelf above the couch, you would be obstructing the beam.

If you have the room to put a powerful projector far enough away to get a near head on projection you could do this though. (Starts at 1:12)

You can already play Kung fu live (ps eye), or Kung fu high impact (Kinect) for a nice workout.

They seem to be picking up a lot of steam, John Carmack is currently the CTO of Oculus Rift.  Whether that means anything I don't know.  I wouldn't be surprised if OR made it to PS4/Xbox One.  Shuhei Yoshida (President of Sony Worldwide Studios) made a tweet about it awhile ago.  Not a tweet about PS4 having OR features, but he was asked about it and he didn't deny it and he was then offered a demo of the device. They might be able to get some serious backing.

I think the casuals would love it also, just given the chance to try it though.

yeah but Carmack is as mainstream than linus torval.... I'd bet half of the console gamers have no clue who the guy is..... I personally hope it will make it to PS4 and XB1 and I will be also buying one anyway.... but unless it is tied with a major brand, or have a massive ad campaign with other application than just hardcore gaming and it is shown and proven to the public (makes an appearence on oprha, Ellen degeneres, jay leno or any late night show) it won't be a major success at first....

a partnership with PC oem would be the best... i think...
