I don't think oculus rift will be that popular.... not because it is not good... but because only really tech savvy gamers have heard of it and have interest into it.... and they won't have the marketing and advertising budget companies like MS Sony and other tech company have....

plus more people would buy a console from a known brand and get something packed in with it than go out and buy an add on out of the blue.... this is exactly the Kinect problematic, as a stand alone even if it's really that good, niche tech devices like these are not gonna be picked up as much than if they are packed in with the device people actually want and/or need to buy....

if occulus rift makes a deal with constructors and comes packed in with devices or PCs then it will have a chance to really pick up fast otherwise I'm doubtful of its initial success...

They seem to be picking up a lot of steam, John Carmack is currently the CTO of Oculus Rift.  Whether that means anything I don't know.  I wouldn't be surprised if OR made it to PS4/Xbox One.  Shuhei Yoshida (President of Sony Worldwide Studios) made a tweet about it awhile ago.  Not a tweet about PS4 having OR features, but he was asked about it and he didn't deny it and he was then offered a demo of the device. They might be able to get some serious backing.

I think the casuals would love it also, just given the chance to try it though.

yeah but Carmack is as mainstream than linus torval.... I'd bet half of the console gamers have no clue who the guy is..... I personally hope it will make it to PS4 and XB1 and I will be also buying one anyway.... but unless it is tied with a major brand, or have a massive ad campaign with other application than just hardcore gaming and it is shown and proven to the public (makes an appearence on oprha, Ellen degeneres, jay leno or any late night show) it won't be a major success at first....

a partnership with PC oem would be the best... i think...
