I don't think oculus rift will be that popular.... not because it is not good... but because only really tech savvy gamers have heard of it and have interest into it.... and they won't have the marketing and advertising budget companies like MS Sony and other tech company have....
plus more people would buy a console from a known brand and get something packed in with it than go out and buy an add on out of the blue.... this is exactly the Kinect problematic, as a stand alone even if it's really that good, niche tech devices like these are not gonna be picked up as much than if they are packed in with the device people actually want and/or need to buy....
if occulus rift makes a deal with constructors and comes packed in with devices or PCs then it will have a chance to really pick up fast otherwise I'm doubtful of its initial success...
