I think it's important to point out that, like PSASBR, Smash Bros 4 is going to be on two separate consoles.  3DS and Wii U.  There's a good chance (pretty much guaranteed, really) that one will cut in to the sales of the other.  A lot of people are going to decide which one they want.  I doubt that a large majority of people will get both.  I'm inclined to believe that the majority of Americans would get the Wii U version, regardless of the 3DS' higher install base.

It's not just on a Handheld, it's also still on the Wii U. That means it'll be split across two platforms.

Do you think many people will buy both or just settle for one?

First of all, Nintendo never said they would be released at the same time.

Secondly, the Nintendo console base is very different from the handheld base. I think that the audiences are pretty different.

Thirdly, many people who own both, will buy both versions. 

This is why I think the 3DS version can do monster numbers.

I've actually talked to people who make up the "casual" market (AKA the majority of the market that buys games now), and regardless of which one comes out first, they are much more interested in the Wii U version.  That is without even knowing how the 3DS version looks.  The reason for that is because they are VERY comfortable with Smash Bros as a home console experience.

I've yet to be proven wrong since those games aren't out yet so we don't have sales numbers. The only fact that we have is that all franchises are selling less on the 3DS than the DS except for FE:A.

Wtf r u talking about? This post has nothing to do with what he just said, all he said B/W2 did sell well which is a fact and he pointed out that u changed ur prediction on MH4. Stop being a child and accept ur wrong.

taking into consideration that 3ds has a 3d mario, monster hunter, smash bros... all franchises ds didn't have, I'd say there is a chance. this year we already have pokemon and monster hunter for sure and possibly zelda too. who knows wich will come next year.
