Activision reports low pre-order numbers for Ghosts, blames next gen

Activision explains the low pre-order numbers for Call of Duty: Ghosts, blaming PS4 and Xbox One.

A new Call of Duty game, Call of Duty: Ghosts, is set to hit the shelves later this year. But after the huge success of its predecessor, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Ghosts is struggling to keep up. Activision's Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, noted that pre-order numbers for Call of Duty:Ghosts are "well below the record-setting pace set by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 last year," and the arrival of the next-gen is to blame. He said,

"Our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation amongst past COD pre-orderers is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition"

Hirshberg also noted that despite the low pre-order numbers, DLC sales and number of players playing per month are all higher than previous years. He also added that pre-orders are more than double that of the original Call of Duty: Black Ops, which was last time Activision introduced a new Call of Duty sub-brand.

EA Sporta Brand president reported a similar situation, reporting "softness" in pre-orders for current-gen sports titles as we get closer to the fall and the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One.

So what does the impending arrival of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One mean for upcoming current gen titles?

that does make a lot of sense, maybe sales of CoD will continue to drop slightly but this is a good thing for PS4 and X1, it means players want to get their games on the new consoles and they are feeling done with the current gen

The reason they blame next gen is because they thought people would be surprised by the Call of Duty graphics on PS4/Xbox One. I mean really Ghosts on next gen consoles looks like a standard PS3/Xbox 360 game. It's getting shit on by games like Forza and Killzone.

No, it means that players are still undecided. If players were going to buy CoD on the new consoles, they would have already placed their preorders. This is something that could go either way in the end.

true, but it atleast says they are considering it. which i suppose is a good thing in a way

No, they are still being hurt by the dog... why do you even announce such utter madness if you want a game to sell... a dog is not a wanted feature... at least I think that, but I am not their target-customer anyway

That's probably because it is. There is a reason this game is an off name release. It is merely to cash in on the yearly cod trend with little to no additional efforts. The mainline MW4 or black ops 3 will be the first cod game from them with an actual next gen engine.
