I think it could easily go either way as no one knows for sure If the consumer outside the hardcore gaming community will truly buy into the PS4/X1 so early into their like cycle's.
But If the PS4/X1 sell really badly going into next year it could have potentially catastrophic consequences. PS3/360 game sales demonstrate how reliant Sony/Microsoft are on Third Party publisher to produce games that shift their systems. I think that status quo is unlikely to change anytime soon and poor console sales could hurt Third Party publishers focus on these next generation consoles. It could lead to Publishers sticking with current consoles as their main focus for lot longer, delaying games for larger user-base to show. Previously exclusive PS4/X1 games getting ported to the PS3/360, cutting back on existing production game budgets, cancelling games all together or even looking at other potential ways to release their software.
