I wouldn't make a big deal out of this, except that leaving your PS3 on to fold consumes about 200 W of power that ordinarily wouldn't be consumed (whereas many people leave their PCs on anyway, a PS3 would likely remain turned off when it's not playing games or movies).  200 W * 24 hours * 30 days = 144 kWh per month.  That's a LOT of electricity, to the tune of $10-15 a month.

More expensive then xbox live monthly.  Just a joke guys :)

Or it goes to show that some people will immediately throw the "fanboy" label whenever someone says something that might be construed as negative toward their favorite console.  FYI, I fold on my PC, and I plan to get a PS3, but I don't plan to throw away $10-15/month on my power bill.

claiming how it's a choice between 'cure cancer' and 'global warming' is definitely a pathetic excuse to discredit the whole "Folding@home" project.

if you don't want to spend 10 bucks a month, just say so, don't drag global warming into it.

You're getting too worked up over a simple joke.  I think the reality is that PS3s will neither cure cancer nor cause global warming.

still the fact it, it's one program I'm truly proud of being a part of. And it's for a great cause, 1 million PS3 owners are taking money out of their pocket for a good research program, expecting NOTHING in return. It's a positive thing and it becomes disgusting when people discredit it for no reason at all.

with 3/4 of flops coming from PS3, it doesn't matter if it can cure cancer, at least it's helping pushing toward that ultimate goal.

Again, I'm not trying to discredit anything; I fold on my own PC, and I plan to buy a PS3 when it breaks the $299 barrier.  But energy conservation is also important to a lot of people, and I don't think it's "disgusting" to bring that up.

BTW, just so people know I'm not making these numbers up, if you google "PS3 power consumption" the second link takes you here: http://www.hardcoreware.net/ps3-power-usage-during-foldinghome/

To give an idea of how much this might cost, my Watts-Up Pro estimates that the PS3 will consume about 138 KiloWatt Hours per month at this rate. The price of electricity varies widely around the world, but here in Hong Kong, I pay about $0.12 USD per KWh (after my normal power usage is accounted for). So to keep the PS3 folding 24/7, I will be paying about $16.56 extra on my power bill each month. If I still lived in Vancouver, where they have an abundant amount of hydroelectric power, the cost per KWh is a paltry $0.053 USD. This would mean an extra $7.30 every month to have the PS3 folding 24/7.

If you live next to the Hoover Dam, fold like crazy!  :)
