Forums - Nintendo - Major UK retailer suspends WiiU stock

How odd that they stopped selling 3DS online, same with Amazon.

But this is pretty bad. I wonder if they're still stocking Vita.

They don't. My local ASDA stores have had their gaming section shrink and shrink lately. It wouldn't surprise me if they drop video games altogether, if the PS4 and Xbone start off slow.

Asda isn't that great a store for games.... but they do generally have a larger gaming section than most other retailers (well compared to ones that I've been in). For example Morrison's gaming section is particularly poor (but great for release day games).

I went into HMV the other day, and omg what a mess that was... was looking more like a cheap tacky store than the HMV I knew before Xmas. It had also got rid of lots of DS stock... replaced it with books and other cheap items.

So I don't really know what to think right now.

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

I think it depends on the retailer. My local ASDA has a pretty kick-ass videogame section really; and last time I checked it (about a month ago) they had a full complement of Vita; 3DS & Wii-U hardware and software. Haven't checked it recently, next time I'm near it I might pop in and see what the situation is now.

But they're definitely more than just a food retailer with a tiny game section in the corner =/

They are food sellers. The article says they dont even stock pikmin 3. I guess its different in the US, but here in europe grocers usually carry only the bare minimum in console materials and they hardly sell anything at all. They are usually stashed in a little corner. This is only drama from the press. It will have little impact.

Thats a massive over simplification

Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury have a significant presense in the VG market.  Major grocers in the UK arent just food stores... not even close. they sell everything from beans to televisions.

First you say you have never herard of them and then you tell me that it isnt important.  You are wrong, it is important.

People buy a gaming system in a supermarket from impulse. I don't believe people go into a supermarket to buy a system. Games, perhaps. But not a console.

And yes, they did say that about the One. But I remember seeing the same about the Wii U, and certainly from the 3DS, and yet they have dropped support for these two systems. You know as well as I that preorders can't be used to judge the long term success of a system. It merely paints a positive picture for Day One

Well, so does mine. Top 15 games for all systems, bar the Vita (none) and Wii U (shared with Wii). Though, that has shrunk from Top 25 and half the space which was there is now shared with other stuff, like DVD's.

Though I agree. Sometimes Iforget ASDA does food with all the other stuff in it!

If they are grocers, then their console presence is minimal and they are just gettting rid of it altogether.

There is nothing dramatic here lol. This hardly has any impact at all.

This is actually huge as Asda is the 4th largest UK video game retailer.

Only Amazon, Tesco (another grocer) and HMV are larger.

With Asda having a 50% larger slice of the UK's video game market than the UK's only dedicated video game store.

"The retailer is not stocking 3DS systems online either - despite the handheld outselling the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the UK and across the US, while 3DS software sales are outperforming the competition too."

You missed a bit.

What if this campaign against Nintendo is fueled by EA's money? Like, EA pays stores to stop selling Nintendo games... Ok, maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but it's weird anyway.

Yeah I think it's a little bit of a foreign concept in the US where only recently has Wal-Mart started to integrate the grocery store + department store concept into an all-in-one thing, but in the UK that's been around for a while.

My local tesco has a huge gaming section, with used games, its own pre order, bargin and fully priced charts for PS3 and 360. They're not as big as GAME but they're not some pokey hole in the corner either.
