Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation 4 gives up to 5.5GB of RAM to game developers

No it was Sony fans. Xbox fans actually listened when they said E3 was about the games and the reveal was about the media functions. Sony fans immediately ignored this statement and bashed Xbox One to no end with media box chants and TV, TV, TV. You can't deny it. Sony on the other hand did their usual hush hush and play the "we only care about gamers" card and tried to hide this ram issue under the rug. Unfortunately the truth has come out and the PS4 is just as much as a media box as the Xbox One.

O.MY.WoRds.

I'm starting to understand Nintendo's business practices a bit better and why they don't bother announcing specs and just let the performance of the games do the talking. It looks like a smart move now.

SONY says there's be 8GB of GDDR5. People make a big deal about it and make assumptions. Naturally, SONY doesn't give out every single bit of detail about how the systems resources are used, and when something leaks that goes against fan expectation and rumors, people freak the fuck out and rage over nothing.

Even with developers stating that they're happy, with confirmation that a ton of games are coming, with the system UI seems smooth and seems to do as promised, people still freak the fuck out.

It's official. We play specs. We play sales. We most certainly do not play games.

Get over it. Sony decided to comment on the intricacies of how the Ram works yet said no comment about the split. Basically they are admitting. You can live in denial but as of right now these numbers are the truth.

But silence isn't always comfirmation. We've seen that time and time again; you just gave a good example of a case where that happened. Not saying that using 3.5 gb of ram would be the worst thing in the world, but even the 7gb number that was thrown around was just a rumor. People shouldn't get too attached to "anonymous sources say". I think the OS will be over 1, but 3.5 is too much, but even then it can be reduced. We'll see the same with the Xone ram.

Sony could have just said that the info that Digial Foundry had obtained was bullshit, but they didn't.

My phone can do it as well. I'm sure it has to do with the level of assets that the console is dealing with.

Fair enough, don't know enough about this kind of thing to talk definitively about it.

Yep I'm grasping at straws. Sony has a magic OS that runs on 1gb of ram but also offers multitasking, instant switching, etc just like the Xbox One OS. They are the best hardware and software company of all time and Microsoft should just leave the console business right now. PS4 will sell 500 million units and it is the best console ever imagined. Better?

Calm down it's not that serious, dude.

Embarrassing for Jonathan Blow.

And for Cerny and Sony. How could they have let us believe the ps4 had 7 GB for games. They knew we all thought that was a fact but remained silent. I feel like they lied to me.

I'm now considering not buying the ps4 not because it has less ram but because they thought they could fool people.

Sony never "led us to believe" the PS4 would only use 1Gb for the OS. That was ENTIRELY interwebs/fanboy conjecture. So now another totally unverified interweb/fanboy conjecture about 2.5Gb for the OS comes out and you're all upset that SONY lied to you?? Seriously?

And if you feel that your trust was so betrayed by Sony what's your alternative? The Xbone? Yeah, Microsoft has really built up a lot of consumer trust with that fiasco so far...

Nope, I think they're were just lying, AS USUAL. And typically tellying the fanboys what they what to hear - 7GB RAM for games lol,...what a load of BS. And I would bet that this is only the begining of such annouments to leak out about the PS4.

What are you babbling about? Nobody said the games would get 7GB. And you called Sony fans gullible...

Didn't stop Sony-fans saying it will.

Does Sony officially stated the amount of RAM for games ever? And if they did could someone provide a link please, thanks.

They didn't, but they sure gave the impression that there was a whole lot more than this.

killzone uses 4.5 right, in development for a while, 1st party. They then say, developers asked for 8GB and we listened, big E3 announcement of 8GB in response to developers requests.  The inference is obvious, otherwise why say it?  But surely the system had 8 (in total) all along, otherwise how was killzone going to run?

This all looks disingenuous today. Nothing confirmed, but it looks at the very least disingenuous.

Now if I have that wrong then fine, but I don't think I have.

Yeah, you pretty much have that wrong.

Killzone devs have stated numerous times that they had been working with 4Gb dev kits prior to the February (not E3) announcement by Sony that the PS4 would ship with 8Gb.  Killzone: Shadow Fall  NOW uses 4.5 Gb but up until the last 4 months or so Guerrilla Games was working with dev kits that had a total of 4Gb ram.

Sony hasn't lied to anyone, or been disingenous or anything like that.

5GB for games and 512MB for file swapping or something like that. This leaves 2.5Gb for the OS or whatever they want to use it for. I doubt the OS is taking up 2.5GB, I think Sony is leaving some extra memory for the future.
