Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation 4 gives up to 5.5GB of RAM to game developers

As far as this rumor being true, I believe we can pretty much take it for fact.  If you read the article, they developer showed DF Sony documents on the whole memory issue.  This is much different from some developer telling DF this is whats going on.

I honestly wasn't expecting this. I suppose a lot of people over-estimated the amount of free RAM the PS4 would have, including myself. I guess this makes it barely different than the XB1.

He basically said the Xbox One was a joke because only 5gb of ram was available to developers and his game is using 5gb already blah blah blah. He showed his game at the Sony conference and I bet he is feeling pretty stupid about now. There is no way his game is using 5gb of ram unless he is the worst coder in history.

Isnt his game that one indie game they showed that will be "Open World", I cant believe people actually believed him lmao.

^ This game? Come on now.

yup and thats the point of his game. i remember him saying that open world games nowdays are all about HUGE spaces, but he wants to make the experience of an open world game in the smallest open world. he wants to have the experience and content be as meaningfull as possible. i remember that was his goal with the witness

Yeah, sometimes it annoys me when open world games have vast expanses of pointless space that could have been condensed.  Bigger isn't always better.

5 GB for that though? I can understand 5 GB for the next GTA but this? I wanna know what makes his game need 5 GB if it really runs on 5 GB.

Didn't he say he was loading the whole game world onto the RAM instead of chunks of it at a time?  I may be pulling it out of my ass though.  I'll see what I can find.

You are correct.  At least he alluded to it.  He said it was nicer to have large ammounts of RAM so you could avoid having to stream large chunks of data at different times.  Another dev, Steve Gaynor, agreed and said that his team was loading their game entirely in RAM at once.

I have to say the last few hours have been very entertaining.

It seems all the Xbox fanboys were able to come out of hiding because there was the smallest shred of negative (not really) news for the PS4. Of course, they completely ignore the fact that even if the rumor is correct, PS4 devs still have 0.5GB more RAM to work with, or the same amount that's in the 360/PS3. And much faster RAM, at that. Also, quite funny how they still wish to ignore the MOST important factor, spec-wise, that the PS4 has a more powerful GPU.

Really, Xbox fans should be the last ones talking about specs, since the PS4 beats the One in every category in that department. If you're going to brag about anything about the One, it should be its features and/or exclusives. But, DEFINITELY not specs.

This is what I don't get.  Crysis 3 doesn't even need 5gb of DDR3 RAM if I'm not mistaken.  GDDR5 is more optimized for games plus it's optimized on a console far more (look at what devs did with 256mb this gen).  Why people don't focus on PS4's 50% more powerful GPU is simple, they know X1 can't compete there.  They latch onto RAM now because one bad rumor that I'm hearing has been debunked mentioned the amount (not quality) has been brought to par with X1.  The GPU is the most important part of the trifecta (CPU, GPU, RAM) that's always talked about and PS4 has its biggest advantage there.  PS4 GPU is looking beast especially with "the Crew" devs already basically saying they couldn't use it all being a multiplat game.  Infamous looks mighty impressive whether it's using 4gb or 7gb of RAM.

Need? No, but it can utilise it if you have it

That is VRAM so GDDR5 (with an additional 2GB+ of system DDR3 memory on top) running on 4 Titans maxed out. But don't worry console games will only be running at 1920x1080 with some post proccess AA, where that is 8x MSAA @ 5160x2560.

Ok thanks!  At least I know I'm not crazy now. :-p

As far as I remember, he never bashed the One for only having 5GB of available RAM.  He was explaining why 8GB may seems like a lot, but it really isn't.  He did wonder why MS didn't put more in it, since DDR3 is so cheap in bulk.  Of course, I don't necessarily agree with him that 8 GB is not a lot.

Other than that, the only other comments I have seen from him on RAM have been about the speed of the RAM +  the HW advantages may make scenarios where some games run 60 FPS on the PS4, while only running 30FPS on the One.

You are correct.  Blow never mentioned the X1, he was talking about his game and pretty much what you stated.  If you really think about it, any piece of software can consume a lot of memory if you do not manage consumption.  Probably at this stage of development Blow is not doing a lot of memory management because he does not have to.  IF the whole game can live in memory that might be a best case scenerio for his game performance.

Wow, 300+. "Video games are serious business y'all!"

i know. all my girlfriends keep telling me that

So is it 4.5 GB or 5.5 GB?

I keep seeing two different things.

I think devs have access up to 5.5 GB as of now.  The way it sounds to me is 2.5 is reseverved with a gaf insider saying 1.5GB is what the OS is using now and 1GB is reserved just in case and there is an extra 1 GB for devs if they need it.  And then Sony(MS too) can unlock more later on in the console life.
