Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation 4 gives up to 5.5GB of RAM to game developers

Which part don't you want to believe?

Hmm?

All of it for me :(

Everything Leadbetter wrote in DF I wait somebody confirm or deny before believe... last articles he is trying so hard to troll PS4 and make Xbone better... I don't know why he is so biased.

Anyway, its looking more like its true BUT its nothing for you guys to worry about. Sony is most likely being coy/conservative with the machine at the beginning of the cycle because they don't want to be "caught with their pants down" in regards to the OS - like with the PS3. Reserving a sizable amount of memory for future proofing OS and then some (which is available for devs to use), on top of 4.5GB is a smart way of going about it.

In the future, when the OS adjustments are done and dusted they can lift some of those restrictions.

Edit: Also remember that the PS3's XMB OS used 120MB of RAM, before it was shunk down to 50MB (60% reduction).

Not a big deal 4-5 gig for games is plenty.

Some dev words...

I am sure that i am not on your "buddy" list.  And i am sure that i must have been right otherwise you would have proven me to be wrong(even though you admit that you are not sure if you ever said that).  But, whatever.  Still doesn't change my actual point.  Most of the fanboys change the subject or say "prove it" if someone has a different OPINION than their own.

You are wasting your time :)

I love all these "prove it" replies from PS/Xbox fanboys who seem to have issue assuming what they support or like...
To me, they do that just because they feel it will give more credibility to their posts, like "oh I'm not a PS4 fans, so when I say the Xbox One sucks it is perfectly credible and certainly not because I dislike it" :)

To be fair when someone says "you were making ____ posts" then it's on them to give proof.  Proving that I didn't post something would require that I show you every post I ever made while proving that I did only requires showing one.  Having proof for when you call someone out with a specific claim is absolutely what you should be doing.

I hope this isn't true, but if it is well not much we can do either way.

I thought the OS only took up 1GB...

I will be serious now...

My feeling for this news: FAKE.

All about Richard Leadbetter trying to downplay PS4 and make the Xbone looks better.

Quote me latter for the truth.

I think it's fake also. There's no reason why the ps4 should be using more ram for its OS than the xbox one is, especially when GDDR5 ram is supposedly faster. Even if it is true - it seems like something that can be fixed before launch or in less than a year;  it's not like they have to add more ram to the ps4 they just have to make the OS use less.

Why does the OS need 3gb of RAM?

As a programmer I can say, that the program-code isn't using much space, the data is eating up space. That's why games these days are usually bigger than other applications, as they contain a lot of data: videos or animation-data, polygon-models, textures, world-data. The PS4-OS needs some data for icons and flashy animations, but not that much. The top-suspects for the excessive RAM-usage are the video-sharing-feature and the reserved-for-later-use-security.
