1. And why do we do stupid things? Is there no reason for that? Just being human?

2. Also do you find faith stupid? If you do, isn't that a natural things for humans as you said?

1. I'm no psychologist but I would assume it has something to do with humans not being perfect, being easily misguided by quests for sex, power, etc, never learning common sense, due to bad parenting, etc. Plus, some people are just born stupid, seriously.

2. Who said faith was stupid? You?

1. Yeah but there is no logical explanation!

2. Nope but some people think that!

It's more that, even if you got them to admit a logical contradiction on some point, their belief in God is more fundamental than that. Those capable of being persuaded to nonbelief already would have, or have social reason not to [surrounded by less than tolerant believers].

I'm actually not trying to persuade anyone. I was just wondering if people thought the argument was sound.

Any thread like this, whatever your purpose, gets out of hand quite fast.

fwiw your logic is sound and the definition of perfectly loving is what's up for debate.

1. Uhh...yeah it is. People being born stupid can be explained by biology. People becoming stupid because of bad parenting or bad environments can be explained by sociology/psychology.

2. Good for those pepole.

I think religious types dont follow logic.

So a religious guy can't teach logic in school? D:

The topic is religion, not teaching biology in school.

They dont follow logic as far as religion goes. They just follow their desires.

Logic isn't a biology subject.

I think they follow logic. They follow their own logic (even if that seems illogical to you). All humans pursue their desires.

Perfection is subjective (human), God (if God does exist) is well and truly beyond such things as human subjectivity.

You can't explain faith with logic.

I don't think any sane human would ever admit that the most important component of their beliefs is based on absolutely no logic.

It's more that, even if you got them to admit a logical contradiction on some point, their belief in God is more fundamental than that. Those capable of being persuaded to nonbelief already would have, or have social reason not to [surrounded by less than tolerant believers].

What's fundamental about it?

They want to believe in God more strongly than they believe in any single thing about him. The idea that everything has meaning, that you are important, that someone cares about you, and that you'll go somewhere you deserve after death. It comes from the natural human faculty to assign purpose to everything.

Who's to say there isn't?

About the point of the thread... What are you trying to prove? That arguments can confirm the non existance of something?

Fine, math then. Though Biology does follow logic aswell, but for the sake of simplifying the argment lets go with math.

You make it sound like i said they are the only ones that do it. But, not believing in religion is not a desire, its a product of logic. It has been disproven time and again for anyone who wishes to see it, so only the desire to believe it can drive this logic you say they follow. Wich is unlogical because it has a base on desire.

They believe because they want to. Wether its true or likely doesnt seem to matter, because this desire makes them want to believe in it, whatever it is.

There's no evidence for it.

My point is to exchange with a diverse range of opinions and to facilitate discussion and/or debate. Perhaps also to learn something from the perspective of other people. I know no one's going to magically come in and say, "That's it. You've convinced me. I'm now an atheist." I've spoken with many theists who I knew would never change their mind, but the discussions were interesting nonetheless.
