Forums - Microsoft Discussion - 78.2 million Xbox 360 sold.

Funny coincidence that 78.2 is the number currently showing on the front page graph for PS3.

Anyway, clearly their 77 million figure for PS3 is an old number. So yay for more lazy journalism for not citing the date on which that 77 million figure was put out.

As at 29 June VGC had 360 sold through ~77.8 million so that means <500K in the retail system, or ~5 weeks of stock at current level of sales. They're going to have to ship a lot more over the coming weeks because even with Xb one launch 360's going to sell a lot of units over the holidays.

I don't know, I guess cause it's true.

Oh, the gloating, all the gloating that has been going on, the massive gloating, has all been faked!

But they should look at it this way, they will get to gloat all over again soon - maybe.  But it will be diminished because Xbox 360 is about to pass Wii in North America, and there will probably be a X360 price cut in the near future.  They will not like that one bit, but say some thing about 'gaming in North America' it isn't important or 'true gaming.'

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

Shipped at end of June, not surprising.

Well done.

It's not lazy, it's an estimate. Given Sony stopped giving exact PS3 figures over a year ago it's pretty hard to pin point it. Last figure we got was 70mill last November.

Anyway, 78.2m is great, should hit 79.5m+ by end of September Q.

You do realise 360's 78.2 million is up to 30 June 2013 and PS3's 77 million is only to March 2013? So this changes nothing in terms of which system is slightly ahead globally. IN fact it confirms that the VGC number for 360 up to 29 June is pretty much right.

Firstly, good to see you back. I thought you'd left permanently and I thought that was unfortunate for this site. So I'm glad to see you back on the boards.

Secondly, estimate or not, the 77 million is an old number from Q1 2013. It is lazy journalism to put 77M next to 78.2M and not point out that the 77M figure is 3 months older than the 78.2M figure. It implies the 77M and 78.2M figure are both including the June quarter, which is misleading to the reader. Misleading the reader is either lazy journalism at best or corrupt journalism at worst. But in gaming it's pretty par for the course. But in a broader context a lot of MSM journo's are rather on the lazy side when it comes to putting facts and figures into their proper context. So I guess the institutionally immature gaming press (by that I mean it's only been around for a few decades) is kind of learning from it's older (been around for a couple of centuries) but not terribly much more venerable uncle.

You know the 360 has suffered from the same sort of lazy journalism. So I don't know why 360 fans have been defending the low state of gaming journalism merely because it's been positive news about 360 / Xb one this time around. Slack journalism is bad for everyone, it shouldn't matter which platform is being made to look good.

Like I said in the other thread, not quite the epic turnaround Nintendo got with the Wii, but when you consider the 360 had the worst start of all 3 next gen consoles and was coming back from selling 24 million or whatever Xbox consoles, quite an amazing feat for MS.

I agree I don't like it when known figures are ignored for comparisons, so I totally see where you're coming from. The 77 mill figure starting popping up early Jan though and it perfectly equals PS2 + PS3 shipments since march + the 63.9m install base mar 31st 2012.

PS3 well may be ahead right now (I'm waiting for Sony on the announcement to believe it) but that 77m figure I don't believe, I think it's just that, an estimate, and all journo's have to go on. Really hoping Sony split PS2/PS3 shipments this Q, I wanna see how close PS2 got to 160 million as well.
