Firstly, good to see you back. I thought you'd left permanently and I thought that was unfortunate for this site. So I'm glad to see you back on the boards. Secondly, estimate or not, the 77 million is an old number from Q1 2013. It is lazy journalism to put 77M next to 78.2M and not point out that the 77M figure is 3 months older than the 78.2M figure. It implies the 77M and 78.2M figure are both including the June quarter, which is misleading to the reader. Misleading the reader is either lazy journalism at best or corrupt journalism at worst. But in gaming it's pretty par for the course. But in a broader context a lot of MSM journo's are rather on the lazy side when it comes to putting facts and figures into their proper context. So I guess the institutionally immature gaming press (by that I mean it's only been around for a few decades) is kind of learning from it's older (been around for a couple of centuries) but not terribly much more venerable uncle. You know the 360 has suffered from the same sort of lazy journalism. So I don't know why 360 fans have been defending the low state of gaming journalism merely because it's been positive news about 360 / Xb one this time around. Slack journalism is bad for everyone, it shouldn't matter which platform is being made to look good. |
I agree I don't like it when known figures are ignored for comparisons, so I totally see where you're coming from. The 77 mill figure starting popping up early Jan though and it perfectly equals PS2 + PS3 shipments since march + the 63.9m install base mar 31st 2012.
PS3 well may be ahead right now (I'm waiting for Sony on the announcement to believe it) but that 77m figure I don't believe, I think it's just that, an estimate, and all journo's have to go on. Really hoping Sony split PS2/PS3 shipments this Q, I wanna see how close PS2 got to 160 million as well.
