I'm not missing the point at all. My point is that your point is absurd. It's not simply about how the term is used. It's an extension of the bigotry that Christians show others. It doesn't begin and end with homosexuals and marriage. They should not be awarded anything. Marriage is NOT a religious concept or term. It did not begin as, nor is it, THEIR sacred institution. Christians want you to think that it is. The only reason to call it anything other than marriage is because religious bigots can't stand the idea that they are not, in some way, denying people something if those people don't follow the rules that these Christians have chosen for themselves. They want a term and concept which predates their religion to be legally recognized as a Christian idea. If they don't like it then THEY can be the ones who choose a new term. Not force everyone else to accept the term as theirs when it never was to begin with. Besides, this is ultimately about striking down homosexuality. They don't bother trying to protest non-religious straight marriages which should be considered just as blasphemous to them if they think what they're trying to uphold is some kind of Christian born value or idea that only Christians should be allowed to engage in. This is much less about the ownership of a term and much more about trying to shaft a particular group of people that Christians don't like with every chance they try to give themselves.

Nice to see a reply that totally dismisses what these people believe in order to please another group.

Yes marriage may not have started out as a relgious term but they took it up many years ago to signify a sacret bond between man and woman when msot athiasts couldn't give a fuck about marriage. Same could be said for white people who invaded america and took the land from the Indians. I don't see Americans handing over their land back just because it wasn't theirs to begin with.

Also you are asking people to change their ways of thinking that has been in place for centuries. After all same could be said about people and guns in America. Where I live guns are stupid and pointless yet in America it is part of the culture. Look at all the uproar Obama had when he wanted to change a guns policy.

So why is it so hard for people to compramise and accept everyone has different beliefs? Like what is the main goal of getting the term marriage for gay people apart from pissing other people off?

Because marriage doesn't belong to Christianity, period. Many other religions and theological stances have been using the term and concept for ages. Before Christianity ever came to be. Should we now tell them they can't use it, not even just in the US but around the world, because Christians cried about it? Don't even talk to me about compromise when many of these Christians want nothing of the sort. The whole point of calling it something different is to deny the idea in some way, shape, or form to the gay community for being able to be considered married. So that's no better than what you're suggesting because they had no problem with it really when it was non-Christian straight couples. They even want to deny them the same kind of benefits that you get for being able to say you're married. There are significant differences between a piece of land where people live and an ideal and you know that. Having people change their ways of thinking that has been in place for centuries? How terrible. Because surely Christians have never been guilty of such a thing nor do they continue to be, right? I suppose we should have been more careful about slavery and women's rights because that was asking people to change their centuries-old ways of thinking.

Your bigotry and steriotyping toward Christians is awful and closed-minded.

I don't agree. Religious people can be very stupid, take a look at Fundamentalists, you know people who believe so much in something that they do mental things.  Why should they be free to practice their beliefs and harm other people, why should they even be let to roam the streets freely? They are dangerous to society. Really see one walking by, you should even consider getting your kids back in the house. (Edit: and I don't care if they help people, they are doing it for their own selfish reasons)

As for gay marriage, people should be free to do anything they want as long as they aren't harming anyone. Gay marriage doesn't harm anyone, it's a life-style choice of individuals and has NO impact on society. Society isn't affected by peoples' personal choices or whether or not the goverment supports it or not, because people aren't sheep. And even if it did, we live in a democracy so it doesn't matter what a minority thinks. And if people were like sheep, or some of them are, well they might quite probably be fundamentalists, and well you know what I think about them.

I don't think Christian American Extremists are the reason gay marriage is slow to adapt. Most religions seem to take a stance against gay activity or gay marriage, and the "extreme" southern bible quoters are certainly one of the biggest lobby groups against gay marriage, but I think the biggest obstacle to gay marriage has just always been society's views in general.

Gay sex (in particular man-man gay sex) is just something that most straight people have a natural aversion to. It's a genetic quirk, and like many things that make people different it's feared and rejected. Further, because of it having the added quality of discouraging man-woman sex (and thus the continuation of the race), something in human instinct tells people that it's "bad" or "gross". Our societies thus have rejected gay unions for a very long time.

Today we have pro-gay marriage lobby groups working to make the gay image less strange to society in general, and we have people growing up in a society that is less anti-gay. People have a greater understanding of what gay is. As such more and more people either are cool with gay marriage or just don't care.

It's just a natural society change pushed by pro-gay groups that has happened. I don't think Christian extremists had much of an effect at slowing the acceptance, I just think it's something that naturally takes time.

I wouldn't say extremists, since that's probably a relatively small population. I think in America especially many of the self-proclaimed Christians are actually not Christians at all and/or has a completely wrong understanding of what the gospel is. A real Christian should not be religious or judge and condemn another person. They can say that they don't believe in homosexuality, but the Bible clearly states that you are to love every person, no matter who they are. Jesus Christ was never religious. In fact, it was the religious fundamentalists at the time (the Pharisees and Jewish leaders) who ultimately had him crucified. He often times hung out with the social outcasts (the crippled, the prostitutes, the tax collectors, etc). He called a bunch of uneducated nobodies to become his disciples. He reverses the values of this world. The last shall be first. The poor shall be rich. Love your enemies as yourself. The portrait of the Christian faith is of a man dying not just for the people he loves, but also the very people who had him killed. If you are a Christian and a follower of this man, how do you in good conscience judge and condemn another human being, whom you are to love as yourself? It is regrettable what the public perception of Christianity has become today, though not surprising. There are many Christians in this world who do live out their faith as best as they can and invest their lives into helping others, but those are the Christians who we'll never know or make any news headlines.

You're writing a lot of bigotry there.  Religious people can be stupid.  Gay people can be stupid.  Black people can be stupid.  Women could be stupid.  Scientists can be stupid.  People in any of these groups ( or any other group) can also be wonderful.

The crap your spewing there is exactly what has harmed gay people for so long.  Gay men have had an image of being pedophiles or perverts.  If you saw one you should get your kids in the house.  Are all gay men peophiles?  Absolutely not.  To think they are is bigotry.

But the answer to one bigotry is not another.  Many religous people are kind, good people.  Many gay people are kind, good people.  Some of both groups are very bad.  That's just people in general.

Making stereotypes of one group while supporting another makes you sound like a small-minded idiot.

i said as long as they DONT harm anyone....

because if we ban people on practicing religion... they will feel how WE feel when we CANT marry our love ones...

im gay, im not religious... but stepping on someone'r right liek practice one's religion is the same with the goverment banning gay marriage... there is no progress there

please dont be bigot, if you dont believe on what they practice... just let them be...banning is not really a solution....

That's too bad, I thought I was intelligent. Maybe I'm just a peophile after all.

Wonderful people are wonderful, but the religion they practice could be very not wonderful, and it's dangerous. What do you say to that?

Where homosexuality has 0 evil in and of itself, religion does. Homosexuality doesn't make people bad, it doesn't affect the makeup of society, because family and family values don't matter. People will tell you the contrary but they have no proof.
