I wouldn't say extremists, since that's probably a relatively small population. I think in America especially many of the self-proclaimed Christians are actually not Christians at all and/or has a completely wrong understanding of what the gospel is. A real Christian should not be religious or judge and condemn another person. They can say that they don't believe in homosexuality, but the Bible clearly states that you are to love every person, no matter who they are. Jesus Christ was never religious. In fact, it was the religious fundamentalists at the time (the Pharisees and Jewish leaders) who ultimately had him crucified. He often times hung out with the social outcasts (the crippled, the prostitutes, the tax collectors, etc). He called a bunch of uneducated nobodies to become his disciples. He reverses the values of this world. The last shall be first. The poor shall be rich. Love your enemies as yourself. The portrait of the Christian faith is of a man dying not just for the people he loves, but also the very people who had him killed. If you are a Christian and a follower of this man, how do you in good conscience judge and condemn another human being, whom you are to love as yourself? It is regrettable what the public perception of Christianity has become today, though not surprising. There are many Christians in this world who do live out their faith as best as they can and invest their lives into helping others, but those are the Christians who we'll never know or make any news headlines.
