Forums - Sales - "Sony cut the PS3 price twice" line is getting old... Read and find out why

Okay readers.  I'm going to assume that we've all completed math and such right?  Okay then.

I'm only going to use U.S. numbers, as this is where the confusion lies the most, as other territories have had less SKUs.

The PlayStation 3 launched in November of 2006 with two separate SKUs:

One had a sixty gigabyte hard drive (600).  It also had wireless, and memory card readers, unlike the twenty gigabyte version (500) which lacked the aforementioned amenities.

Shortly thereafter, Sony Computer Enertainment America decided that the demand for the twenty gig was not strong, and decided to drop it.  After that, Sony dropped the price of the sixty gigabyte model to five hundred US dollars.  They then introduced the Eighty gigabyte Motorstorm Limited Edition pack for six hundred US dollars.  So for those keeping count, that is one price drop.

The forty gigabyte Version of the PS3 came out in november, sans b/c, memory card readers, and two usb ports.  It was priced at US 400.  This is not a price drop, because it is a whole different Sku.  And the 80 gigabyte received a price drop to 500 US.  So yes, the PS3 has had "two price drops" on two separate Skus.  By that same token, the Microsoft XBOX 360 has had three right?

Thank you everyone for reading, as clearly, there was some confusion over the different PS3 Skus.  Hopefully this will quell the two price drops in six months line... mmkay?

This topic FTW.

Forget that, even if it was two solid $100 price cuts from the initial 60GB, the line has been used to death. Even if it has been over 4 months, we hear the same, "Yea, but it took 2 price cuts to get there".

I think people say that mostly because the 20 GB was very hard to find, so $600 was the widely assumed minimum PS3 price. It then decreased by $200, with other $500 models in between which makes it easy to interpret it as two price cuts.

But you're correct that there's some confusion regarding this, given that there have been so many changes to the available models.

MS made one price cut across all the models at the same time, Sony made two price cuts with months between each other... you can try to spin it whatever you want, but thats two price cuts... vs one...

@DMeisterJ

I don't know why you bother, people who bring those up are xbox fanboys, they will use that line more than ever now, since xbox is fading away.

Who cares, PS3 is selling nicely, Sony gaming division is making money, AAA games are finally coming out in not so distant future, I for one, am glad I bought my 60GB PS3

SERIOUSLY:

Umm....good read, did you write this?? And, yes, some people were confused with this..

What's really funny about the line is that Sony's "two pricecuts" were needed to get the PS3 down to the 360's launch price. It started out 50% more expensive and still managed to track close to 360 sales. Now it's still more expensive and has fewer games and it's outselling the 360. Imagine if it had one of its major titles out.

And to rub salt in MS's wounds, even with the "desperate" price cutting, Sony was able to become profitable in 2/3 of the time AND without a single AAA title (360 needed Halo3 to become profitable).

Of course, there's also the fact that in the same way the PS3 has technically had 4 SKUs and 2 price cuts, the 360 has had 5 SKUs and 3 (misguided) pricecuts.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

I find your post interesting. However ... here's the deal:

Not trying to flame, but when Sony axed the 20gb, as you stated, they dropped the 60gb to $499. It was still a price drop. And the 80gb dropped in price as well. How can that be just one price cut? Just because the models are gone within six months, it's gone and the price cut happened. Two of them.

Folks are really trying to do Sony's job and spin it for them. Hate to say that, but ... there were two price cuts for PS3 unless you phailed in arithmetic.

I tell you - I have never seen a lot of gamers so pissed off than PS3 owners. Posts to rant about price drops? What's next?

@Madskillz

after being told throughout last year that THEIR console was going to be discontinued & it was doomed (a thread like that every day)...or constant MGs4, FFXIII going to 360 rumors...
