I much prefer Red Dead, Bully, and I even liked NA Noire quite a lot. Would be nice to also see a new IP *agent*.

GTA is rightfully hyped because they are the most interactive games in the market.
You drive, shoot, fly, parachute, dive, date, etc... they got the best comedic lines and scenes, the music is great, so is the gameplay and story.

What other game or franchise comes closer?

To me it tries to be this jack of all trades, but ends up being a master of none. The 3rd person shooting I've seen better in other games, it's gotten better since 5. The music I feel is okay, nothing fantastic. Story I feel has a lot of cliches and is uninteresting to me for a lot of cases, kind of overrated. The voice acting I think is top notch as is the attention to detail and graphics in an open world game. I aslo do not like the characters too much as I feel they are unrelatable, and I don't particularly like any of them. 

Although, I really can't answer that last question. It does do things right, but overall I feel it's overrated in many aspects. A little too ambitious for its own good. I don't like when open world games cram too much into one game with the minigames, as it feels over crowded and in the end it loses the overall focus of the game itself. Just my two cents though.

To each his own, obviously. We all have our opinions, and sadly yours can't all be correct like mine. GTA is a great franchise (if we ignore the steaming pile of crap that is GTAIV), but it's also one of the most overrated franchises out there.

Shenmue is a vastly more immersive game, and that's not necessarily a knock against GTA, but Shenmue was way ahead of it's time. Not that most people know that since they never actually played it -_-

That's harsh. GTAIV was good. Not as good as the reviews suggest, but it certainly wasn't bad.

It was was ahead of its time but that doesn't mean it still is.  If they made a new shenmue it probably wouldn't come anywhere near gta 5. Unless they made it on a much much smaller scale.
