Forums - General - Samsung unveils 1TB solid-state drive

o:

Following up on the SSD 840 series that came out in November 2012, Samsung today announced its new entry-level solid-state drive, the 840 Evo.

The main difference between the two is the fact that the 840 Evo offers up to 1TB of storage space, double that of the 840 series, and significantly faster performance.

Like the previous drive, the 840 Evo comes in the 7mm-thick, 2.5-inch design and supports the SATA 3 (6Gbps) I/O standard.

Samsung says the 840 Evo uses its compact 10-nanometer class 128GB NAND flash memory, which the company started mass-producing in April, and is equipped with Samsung's proprietary multicore MEX controller.

Depending on the capacities, Samsung claims that the new drive offers between two and three times the speed of the 840 series, offering up to 520MBps sequential write speed and up to 540MBps read speed. In random access, the drive offers up to 98,000 IOPS.

If the company's claim is true, these numbers put the 840 Evo among the fastest consumer-grade SSDs on the market.

The Samsung SSD 840 Evo will be available in five capacities, 120GB, 250GB, 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB, and can be used in basically all applications where regular hard drives are used.

The drive becomes available for purchase in the first week of August, but it's currently unclear for how much, so check back soon for that plus our full review.

All yours for the amazing value of $1000!(not the real price, but i guessed here) But seriously, SSD's are pointless until they become as cheap as traditional hard drives. Nice to see them in such large sizes though

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

What's the price? Still 1$ per GB?

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

Yeah, the price is what makes them pointless. Gonna have to wait another 10 years when 1TB is vaiable. Just jumping from 32 to 64GB is crap now.

Not only are they not pointless but they make a damn good OS drive.

Costs are now getting better. 80 cents to the GB is average and even as low as 65 cents to the GB is seen. Sure mechanical HDD's certainly have the price advantage of 5 cents per GB but depending on your needs, an SSD is very much worth it.

Granted a 1 TB SSD for the consumer market is a bit unnecessary unless you work with massive uncompressed video files a lot.

Why would they need to be as cheap as traditional hard drives? They are significantly faster. A single SSD might be the best investment for many PCs these days.

Because the price is what makes them consumer friendly. Intill SSD are at the same cost as HDD's of now. They aren't better. Regardless of the positve benefits.

They are still better.  Price is not the only factor that determines if something is better.   Is a low MSRP game better than a full priced game just because it's cheaper?

You can buy a good 60 GB SDD as a boot/OS drive for just $70 or a 128 GB SDD for just under $100.   Does that match the price advantage of mechanical HDD's?  No, of course not.  But can a mecahnical HDD match the performance of that SDD?  No, of course not.  You pay more for the improved performance and noise reduction.

no moving parts is another advantage of SSD.
I personally think they have a lot of advantages over HDDs. speed, reliabilty, performance.

That's great. Except that I can buy a 1TB VelociRaptor HD and a 128GB SSD to use as cache to achieve similar performance, pay half the price and have double the reliability(on the HD, at least). Higher capacity SSD's prices need to go lower, paying $1000 for that is just absurd.
