Forums - Nintendo - Are Pikmin 3 FW sales proof enough for you that the Wii U is not doomed?

Not at all.

It can be amusing. Though it creates a few delusional posts from diehards.

Let's wait for atleast two weeks this time before getting all happy about a boost in sales shall we?(reffering to Lego City).

3ds had a 6 month drought with lots of idiots saying things like "looks like the 3ds savior is in another castle, zelda didn't help, wich is next?". and another handheld with better visual quality and same price and suposed to be the mesias for sony fans was about to release. it's pretty similar actually. the differences are the extended drought for wii u as well as the competitors releasing for $100 and $200 more respectively and with less hype over them.

Even if we start counting from the day it released in Japan it wasn't 6 months.  There's also the fact that at its worst (before the price cut announcement), the 3DS sold 3x more than what the Wii U did last week.  In fact, the Wii U hasn't sold that much since the first week on January.  The 3DS also had room for a 32% price cut.  The Wii U would also need to somehow outperform the Wii in Japan if it wanted to see 3DS like sales there.  Since that isn't going to happen, even if it did see a 3DS like resurgence in the west, the overall effect would be diminished.

So really, the only similarity they have is a higher powered competitor coming out.  Though even with that it is two competitors and they are launching in the holiday season.  They also are both currently dominant in the two regions the Wii U needs to improve the most in.  The DS was also far more prominent in the handheld market in 2011 than the Wii is in the console market of 2013.  It stands to reason that a lower price and more Nintendo games are more effective at swaying a DS buyer to 3DS than a PS3/360 buyer to Wii U.

To be honest Dragon Quest X caused a (very slightly) larger hardware bump than Pikmin 3 did. Media Create numbers:

Dragon Quest X week - 22.829 (33.3k DQX sold)

Pikmin 3 week - 22.199 (92.7k Pikmin 3 sold)

That's kinda disappointing. Pikmin 3 sold ok for itself, but really didn't move hardware all that much.

I think that's one of the problems with Nintendo franchises is there's a lot of overlap in terms of the fanbases that don't create the hardware spikes you might expect. The fans of Pikmin are probably the fans of Mario for example.

You need things like Monster Hunter and Wii Sports and GoldenEye 64 to bring in non-Nintendo fans.

Chances are most people who would have bought the Wii U for Pikmin already have bought it: it was practically announced with the system. You will not see a major sales spike from this title so much as games catching up to where buyers are already.

Still, for people on the fence, it's a great additional title that will give the Wii U a library edge over the PS4 and XB1 after their launches cool off. 'Tis a good beginning.

3ds released february/march and it wasn't untill mario 3d land released in november that things got really good (the price cut came before but didn't do magic) as I said many times, wii u's current sales are no parameter for anything but if you want to compare it to 3ds anyway then here it goes: wii u's drought period was longer and worse (3ds at least got zelda and star fox remake during that time) and wii u is also more expensive than 3ds was.

about the bolded: how can two unreleased platforms be dominant in the present? obviously you meant ps360 wich is irrelevant since you talked about ps4/xone.
