and "massive fees for console games"?  are you having a laugh? its a couple of cents per disc.

It's several dollar/euros per copy (I'm talking about the fee pulishers have to pay the console manufacturer)

you can easily tell by the difference in price between PC and console games

what does that have to do with the analogy given?

what does fees paid to console manufacturers by publishers have to do with blu-ray licensing fees?

*sigh* I guess I suck at explaning things in english, so another try:

from my original post:

"the BD Association collects some license fees for using BD and MS some for using Direct X and the like, but both of those are pretty much scraps and don't even begin to compare to the massive fees for console games (or for Steam sales or Apple App-Store sales and so on, which are legitimate "eco-systems")"

the first part says "yes, BDA and MS get some money from each disc/each game for windows"

the second part says "but that's nothing compared to the money real 'eco-systems' get per copy"

my examples for "eco-systems" here: consoles, steam, apple

If you say so. Doesn't alter the fact that as you say people have those pc's that they paid for and that MS made money from.

XBone games will be on blu-ray which sony makes money from. So XBone is part of the sony ecosystem? Just stop.

good grief.  what a god awful analogy.

How so? Doesn't alter the fact that as you say people will have those XBones that they paid for and that sony made money from.

The bottom line is that unless microsoft is getting a share of sales revenue from at least the majority of pc games then it's not a microsoft ecosystem.

Of course. Plus many games use DirectX, which was made by Microsoft to run in Windows. And the rumor is Sony has either licensed DirectX 11.1 or copied it for the PS4.

I would say around DirectX 6 it passed OpenGL, but other would say DirectX 10.

Even by Steam's own data, they had a significant number of people running their game on Windows 8, shortly after launch. Yea, you'd think those gamer would be on Linux more than about any other group.

To state otherwise is silly. That's why I laugh so hard I almost bruise a rib when people say, 'Screw Microsoft and the Xbox, I'm going to be a PC Gamer!"

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

¬_¬ Sony's graphics API has a very similar feature set to Dx 11.1, because the PS4 uses a GPU archictecture that was originally built for Dx 11.1

The very same moment they treated the PC as a competitor for their Xbox360 and stopped releasing its games on it, it became clear that no, PC gaming is not part of MS ecosystem.

No Halos past nº2 (not even Halo Wars!), no Gears of War after the first game, no Forza, etc. And they have even shoot down their PC gaming studios like Ensemble and the ones behind Flight Simulator.

Of course we still use Windows to play, but so what? We also drive our cars through roads, yet we don't consider roads nor the industry that makes them part of the automotive industry, right?

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

they are going to try and force gamers on win8 for dx11.2 they can go fuck themselves, im never going back to 8.

I always think this way: If PC games can push the sales of PC, then it will push the sales of Windows, and then bring the most important revenue to Microsoft. So, yes, Microsoft is benefiting from PC gaming.

Well... Games for Windows Live is a thing. Never use the client (steam is my friend) but the in-game features are very decent.

4 ≈ One

Not really as they don't have any control or receive any direct revenue from 99.999% PC gaming. I would say the Win app store is really MS's ecosystem on PC. A ecosystem implies a 2 way relationship IMO and MS don't really have that for most of PC gaming. It would be more fair to say that Windows is a major peice of the overall PC ecosystem.
