Capcom hit by layoffs, senior VP Christian Svensson out (update)

http://www.polygon.com/2013/7/11/4514896/capcom-hit-by-lay-offs-senior-vp-christian-svensson-out

Capcom U.S. has undertaken a staff reorganization today, resulting in the loss of its senior vice president Christian Svensson.

Svensson posted the news on his Facebook page today, saying that he had volunteered to go as part of the planned re-org. He did not say who else had been affected, but wrote that "sadly, I'm not the only one affected by the reorganization today. Over the next few days, I'll be gathering resumes from as many as I can and will be sending them out to my contacts around the industry to see if there's a 'love connection' to be made."

Svensson has been with Capcom for eight years. "I've had the opportunity to interface with the best fans any company could ever hope to have," he wrote. "I know that I wasn't always able to deliver what they wanted, but I promise that I did my best to champion their needs and wants. So thank you to the fans who made my job rewarding, challenging, and, if nothing else, interesting."

Svensson, a former games journalist, previously worked at Midway. Through the Capcom-Unity blog he has been a frequent point of contact with Capcom fans, addressing concerns about everything from DRM to sleeping franchises, like Mega Man.

"While I wish the company the best of luck, Capcom is going in a different direction and the need for people at my level, relative to other areas, is lacking," he added. "Those who know me well, know that I've been ready to go for quite some time. We tried some things that worked. We tried others that didn't. We fought fights that were worth fighting and even won a few. I'm proud of what we accomplished."

Capcom in the U.S. employs about 130 people. California law mandates that any layoffs equal to 50 people or 50 percent of the workforce must be registered. Given no sign of a registration, it looks like the number of layoffs is less than 50, though talk of a "restructure" likely means the tally will be in the double-figures.

Update: Capcom has provided Polygon with a statement. "Capcom today laid off several employees from the U.S. office as part of an overall organizational restructure of the company. The transition to the new generation of hardware and changing industry landscape have required us to adapt our business to best meet our new goals. We sincerely thank each individual for their contributions and wish them well."

They should have made more mobile games..  Phoenix Wright trilogy HD came too late for them...

I liked Svensson, sad to see him go and I hope he will go to somewhere where he can be happy.
I just hope that AA5 won't get delayed or something like that.

Bad news, specially for those affected by the layoffs.

In the case of Svensson, it gives the impression that he just used this as his chance to leave, and that the things at Capcom aren't very good.

Sorry for Capcom and those people who have lost their jobs.

Its a shame I think DmC was their best game in such a long time, and I really really enjoyed the re-release of Okami. That game's unique art style holds up really well in HD.

I also heard Street Fighter 4 and Monster Hunter were good game. Its a shame Capcom, but best of luck with future endeavors.

The way it is redacted, the layoffs seem to be only on Capcom's US branch of the company, and with it being "only" 130 employees I don't think they had anything to do with game development.

I recognize the name but I never really understood what his role was at Capcom.

I would guess hes a PR and marketing spokesperson but everytime he talked it seemed like he really didn't speak 100% for the company. I often got the feeling he was guessing as much as he was knowing.

Meanwhile a PR guy like Pete Hines represents Bethesda and Bethesda's products much better.

I don't blame him though. Probably the culture at Capcom is very different and a PR spokesperson just isn't natural to them.

He was senior VP of planning and business development, in CAPCOM USA. So he had some say in english localisation, working with western developers, doing marketing and premotion in the USA etc. Which meant he had very little power as all the actual decisions were made by CAPCOM Japan and he had to fight tooth and nail for every little thing. For example PC ports (dealing with shit like the producer of Street Fighter saying no to a Super Street Fighter IV port after SF IV PC had "exeeded expectations"), bringing the Ace Attorney games over (for some reason the producers in Japan don't really support international releases), getting MvC 3 made etc. He also speant a lot of time interacting with the community, undermined by the fact that CAPCOM Japan would make decisions and change things at the last minute like canceling all Megaman Games after he had started hinting that there would be some Megaman news soon.

From what I understand anyway
