No. I do not think the 3DS will surpass the DS as the all time best selling console in Japan. It may be a close second, but being first would take dramatic SW support, from not only Nintendo, and some type of miracle.

Yes, its third-party support is pathetic for such a dominant platform. It would be unthinkable for PSX or PS2 to have so few support from big Japanese developers.  A Nintendo system has to at least sell twice as much as any other system in order to at best get half support other systems would get.

Of course, this is old news, but with 3DS it is more blatant than ever.

well to be fair japan had Diamond/Pearl version Already at the time+Holiday for it..... Oh yea it got a remodel too in just a year and 3 months! 3DS hasn't gotten it yet(games)! MH4+Pokemon should push a hell of alot this Sep-Dec! But anyway i can see it pushes over 25mil units! Its sure to come 3rd place but another thing we all have to realize is SSB4 is coming which we never had! Wat happens if that was a game everybody bought up? That game has potential to sell in japan from 1mil-3mil imo

Ok thats a great prediction! 24mil i think it'll do minumum. But it has potential to get close to 30mil but it all depends on software imo. The thing DS didn't have but 3DS in terms of System Sellers is Monster Hunter. Depending on that game we'll see a huge spike in sales. Also SSB4. I really think Japan will eat it up in sales. i mean first portable smash+japan= O.o! It'll sell as little as 1mil but has potential to sell up to 3mil imo

It can't be a close 2nd because the original GB sold 32 Million so that would be 2nd based on your thinking.

The DS had Pokemon, and 3 Kirby games at this point too. 3DS will have Monster Hunter, the 1st 3D Pokemon game, and Kirby will likely release in 2014 too. Mario Party is pretty big in Japan as well. Plus, at this point, the DS was only $130. 3DS is still more expensive than the DS launch price.

I think the sales have a lot of room to grow.
