Forums - Microsoft - Dead Rising 3 producer says it’s primarily a horror game, “a comedy game second”

Gaming Everything

“It was actually intentional right from the outset. We talked and discussed this a lot with Capcom Japan [and] we wanted to make a game where you weren’t just repeating the same formula of time running out.”

“We found it frustrating as gamers even when we were playing Dead Rising 1 and there’s so much of that game we loved that we wanted to just explore in… but we didn’t want to just say ‘okay, there’s no time-limit’, you know, we did that with Off the Record and found that yeah, it was cool, but there’s so much to do other than trying to do constant side-missions. We actually wanted to have zombies be the threat – it felt like zombies should be the star of a zombie game, whereas it kind of felt like they were just a toy.”

“So if we’re going to say they should be the threat, then they should look threatening and the game should look threatening, and it all should show a line to that vision that this is actually a horror game first and a comedy game second.”

- DR3 executive producer Josh Bridge

Changing up the forumla is always a good thing for a studio to do, and it sounds like it’s coming at least somewhat from a place of artistic desire. Fine by me! Hopefully it turns out well.

Is this still Dead Rising we are talking about?

Sounds very interesting! I play it in a few years, or maybe if someone I know gets an XBO.

And a Call of Duty game third, and a Dead Rising game fourth... maybe.

Well there goes Resident Evil...

Now turning into Resident Comedy

There is nothing wrong with this. Dead Rising has some gameplay traits that would simply be inexcusable next gen. Does giving it better gunplay, make it a COD clone, no it doesn't.

Dead Rising 2 had better gunplay than Resident Evil 5, so I don't really understand your complain.

And regarding the article, well...duh.

Well they are going for the COD crowd so...your argument is invalid!

There's a lot wrong with it. Dead Rising was successful enough to turn it into a franchise, and people who bought the previous games bought them to play Dead Rising for the unique game that it was. Aiming for the Call of Duty audience (Capcom Vancouver's words, not mine) is pointless because they stand the risk of losing the Dead Rising fanbase while failing to attract this new group because those people already have a game they like to play: it's called Call of Duty.
