Forums - Gaming Discussion - Pacther: MS to pay Sony $150-$250million in royalty for Blu-Ray. Says he is right 70-80% of the time

Pachter is the man.

You missed how 70-80% of his predictions are correct - and honestly, in the big picture of things, I have no reason to doubt he's telling the truth - seeing what money he's making and for how long he's been doing that job, I'd say his clients are more than happy with him.

Let me put it this way, I used to watch him regularly, but he said something very confusing and highly doubtful.  He said that MS would NEVER put Blue-ray in the Xbox because it belonged to Sony, and since they were competitors MS didn't want to do that.  It made no sense as tons of Microsoft computers and Laptops have Blue-Ray, and MS's compeition with sony in the home console business has nothing to do with paying them for a worth while and even essential profit.  Even then his clame was dubious and no it has been proven completely wrong.  That and along with the fact with his prediction of a subscribtion based Xbox, and every Nintendo prediction he ever made...ever.  I can't pretend to know why people still trust him, but just look at all of the credit agencies that gave junk bonds AAA+ status and people believed it AND STILL BELIEVE IT TODAY.  People trusting someone for a long time is simply no metric.

If Blu-Ray royalties are 2-3$ per XBONE unit, wouldn't the royalties earned by the sale be given to all 9 members of the Blu-Ray Disc Assocation? This is turn would lead Sony to only earn .22 to .33 per unit....? Where does he get 150-250 million.....

I think this needs to be edited on the first post. So people won't be surprise where Pachter got his $2-3 amount.

Not everyone owns an even share of the royalties, probably safe to say Patcher is off with the amount though.

Sony Started Blu RAY Just check the history And panasonic was Brought in to make it official SOny had the flirst disc the first players the first bluray everything BDA was only formed after a venture was agreed upon with sony so actually person's in the venture still has to pay sony, or giv sony most of the money made!

The first Blu-Ray disc player available in the US market was actually made by Samsung.

Well Samsung is part of the original Blu Ray Disc Association along with Panasonic, LG, Hitachi, Sharp, Thomson, Philips, Pioneer and Sony.

So I guess that is not surprising ^^

They'll likely receive around 1/10 of what Pachter says (and some more royalties on BD discs of which just a part will come from MS), plus, finally, MS' endorsement of BD and free help to spread the format.

But won't some of you think that teh Analyst God gives his best predictions, analyses and advices for free?

Someone tell me how to embed this.

He thinks it's $2-$3 per Blu-Ray drive

And as usual, this moron is completely wrong when it comes to numbers. It's not like you can actually look up the blu-ray royalty rates on the intenet. Oh no, wait......... (It's actually $1.25 for a pc with installed bd software, and XBox One is certainly registeres as such, and the consortium is about 15 companies, so Sony gets around 10c)

stealh edit: forgot the drive. So it's actually around 50c for Sony

You are misreading the royalty table...  That's $1.25 to $1.75 for the software (depending on whether it is 'bundled')  with the actual BR Drive, which will most likely be categorized as a PC, and is $7.00 per unit. That is around $8.25 - $8.75 (unless it is classified as a player then the cost actually goes up to $9.00+) to be divied up amongst BluRay Association and it is very fair to say Sony is at or near the top of the pecking order within that organization so they will indeed be getting the lion's share of those royalties. $2-$3 is not out of the question. Then you have the discs themselves on top of that.

Hate to say it but Mr. 'mostly wrong' Pachter is probably right in this case and you are most likely wrong.

It's $8.25 with the player and the software. $2-3 of that will most likely got to Sony.

Someone should ask Pacther how much money Sony is paying Microsoft to use Windows and Skype:
