Forums - Nintendo - Satoru Iwata Discusses Region Locking

IGN sat down with Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata at E3 to discuss the issue of region locking. Both Sony and Microsoft have announced that their forthcoming next generation consoles will be completely region free, which just leaves Nintendo. The original Nintendo DS and DS Lite were region-free, but this all changed with the Nintendo DSi. Here’s what Satoru Iwata had to say on the controversial issue of region locking.

“From some people’s perspective, it might seem like a kind of restriction. However, we hope people can appreciate the fact that we’re selling our products worldwide. There are many different regions around the world, and each region has its own cultural acceptance and legal restrictions, as well as different age ratings. There are always things that we’re required to do in each different region, which may go counter to the idea that players around the world want the freedom to play whatever they want. I hope that game fans can understand that the industry isn’t doing this solely out of business ego. There are some reasons behind it.”

So they are not going to remove region locking right? xD. Well we tried, I am still going to buy a Wii U in the near future.

Sorry but no... region lock is a archaic imposition... and going region free to region lock is weird.

IGN: Why region lock?

Iwata: (Wall of text) Please understand.

He didn't explained the "why yes" of region lock or benefits to consumers.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

Unfortunately, region locking is something that is hard to boycott. We would basically be saying "we will not play your games until you let us play your games".

I don't really understand why, I'm sure they have their reasons, but I really don't care either way. Why would I? It's not like I can read Japanese anyway .

This. Sucks for the few people that actually do have a real use for region-free consoles (aka play Japanese games we will never get in the west), but 99.9% would never use it anyways.

You guys have a lot of trust in NoA not to fuck up again and do an Operation Rainfall scenario.  I'd much rather have the option in case they decide to not bring some random game again that NoE already has translated and localized in English.

Luckily I don't have to rely on NoA .

I do agree that they need to localize more games, or localize them faster, if they remain this adament on region locking though.

This pretty much - there's also some games that may come out in EU that is by a third party (i.e. the One Piece games for the 3DS for an example) or Braverly Default which is coming out in 2013 in EU but 2014 in NA >.>.

Oh yeah, god damn it I forgot about Bravely Default.  Was going to review that but I'll have to see if one of my writers in EU wants to do it since they'll get it months ahead of when I could possibly get it.  Really need someone to find a work around for the region lock on the 3DS and WiiU like was done for the Wii.
