MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

Morrowind in Elden Ring mod makes mindblowing progress in video 'dedicated to that one guy that commented this project was not going to come out'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/morrowind-in-elden-ring-mod-makes-mindblowing-progress-in-video-dedicated-to-that-one-guy-that-commented-this-project-was-not-going-to-come-out/
The ongoing project to port The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind into Elden Ring—recognised by UNESCO as the eighth wonder of the world*—is one of the more Herculean projects currently bubbling away in the mod scene, and it just got a new update. Long story short: this thing is nuts (complimentary).
In a new video, cheekily dedicated to one particular commenter who declared the project would never get done, author InfernoPlus walks us through the progress he's made on Elden Wind (my title, not his, probably because it sounds like a medieval doctor diagnosing a gastric issue) and, my friends, I'm impressed.
InfernoPlus takes us on a whistlestop tour of Seyda Neen—Morrowind's starting area—and Balmora. Buddy, let me tell you: as a guy who has seen a lot of the original Seyda Neen and Balmora in his life, that sure is Seyda Neen and Balmora. Our boy's done a sterling job. You can buy some starting gear from Arrille and pop into Addamasartus to free the slaves held there.

Thursday gaming news, part two:

CCP Games is no more: EVE Online studio changes its name as it goes independent and enters an AI research partnership with Google DeepMind
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/ccp-games-is-no-more-eve-online-studio-changes-its-name-as-it-goes-independent-and-enters-an-ai-research-partnership-with-google-deepmind/
Some big changes out of EVE Online developer CCP Games today, including that it is no longer called CCP Games: The studio has parted ways with Crimson Desert maker Pearl Abyss, entered into an AI research partnership with Google DeepMind, and ditched its nearly 30-year-old name, rebranding itself as Fenris Creations.

Far Cry 2 and Assassin's Creed Hexe creative director launches a new studio, a few months after surprise exit from Ubisoft
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/far-cry-2-and-assassins-creed-hexe-creative-director-launches-a-new-studio-a-few-months-after-surprise-exit-from-ubisoft/
Just a few months after his surprise departure from Ubisoft, where he'd been serving as the creative director on the mysterious Assassin's Creed Hexe, veteran developer Clint Hocking has founded a game studio called Build Machine Games.

Civ 7 is getting 'by far the most-requested addition' later this month, but I'm more interested in whether it'll finally feel fully baked
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/civ-7-is-getting-by-far-the-most-requested-addition-later-this-month-but-im-more-interested-in-whether-itll-finally-feel-fully-baked/
Late last year, Firaxis announced that Civ 7 would be getting the ability to play a single civilization across an entire game, addressing one of the major complaints from players who weren't thrilled with the latest entry's ambitious experimentation with the Civilization format. After promising in February that Civ's traditional playstyle would return sometime this spring in an expansion-sized update, Firaxis has confirmed we don't have much longer to wait.
In a Steam news post, Firaxis has announced that Civ 7's massive Test of Time update will arrive on May 19, bringing the ability to play a full campaign as one civilization—"by far the most-requested addition," Firaxis says—as well as other major overhauls.
>> Despite the game messing its launch with a feature no one asked and that they’ve now made optional, the game is profitable (link).

My most-anticipated but frequently delayed Zelda-like is finally releasing later this month after 6 years in development
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/adventure/my-most-anticipated-but-frequently-delayed-zelda-like-is-finally-releasing-later-this-month-after-6-years-in-development/
Mina the Hollower was announced in 2022 and originally slated to launch the following year. It's a top-down adventure in the style of older Zelda games, and as far as I can tell there's no grand twist: it's a very orthodox take on the genre, just as Shovel Knight was for the NES-era platformer. The same developer, Yacht Club Games, is responsible for both.
The star attraction is the pixel art, which wends very closely to 8-bit orthodoxy, but does so with modern smoothness and fluency. When it hit Kickstarter in 2022, Bloodborne was mentioned as an inspiration, and it's definitely true that Mina the Hollower looks more Castlevania than it does Link's Awakening. Whatever the case, I'm excited to play it.

Atari just bought the rights to the big daddy of PC RPGs, and a reissue campaign is afoot
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/atari-just-bought-the-rights-to-the-big-daddy-of-pc-rpgs-and-a-reissue-campaign-is-afoot/
Released in 1981, Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord was the first grid-based first-person RPG—what we nowadays call blobbers—and it proved enormously influential. Its art was rudimentary: the monochrome dungeon halls were a series of white lines carefully placed to simulate the feeling of moving through a three-dimensional environment. Leaving the ruggedness of its "3D" world exploration aside, it was an unprecedentedly complex and immersive take on the CRPG, and the American-developed series sold loads—especially in Japan.
The earliest Wizardry games varied a lot depending on the platform: DOS and Commodore 64 versions were as described, but the Nintendo ports were graphically much more vivid, with evocative fantasy pixel art. What unites the first five Wizardry games, no matter the platform, is that they're mostly unavailable to play in 2026, save a remake of Proving Grounds handled by Digital Eclipse and released in 2024.
But it looks like that's about to change: Atari has announced it's acquired "the complete and exclusive rights" to the first five Wizardry games and their "underlying IP". That's pretty big news for CRPG enthusiasts, especially since Atari seems pretty eager to get them back on the market. The announcement cites the possibility of "remasters, collections and new releases" as well as a bunch of other non-game stuff like merch, cards, board games, books, comics, TV and film projects.

Old School RuneScape needs 'to do a bunch of work to stop the game exploding soon', as a problem from 2018 rears its ugly head
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/mmo/old-school-runescape-needs-to-do-a-bunch-of-work-to-stop-the-game-exploding-soon-as-a-problem-from-2018-rears-its-ugly-head/
Old School RuneScape is one of the old guard—with the original version of the game being released way back in 2004. This is where I'd usually tell you about the good old days, but I was nine years old at the time. Sorry.
Anyway, that means it has some legacy code issues that need wrangling with—which, per some developer comments on the 2007scape subreddit (thanks, GamesRadar+) will make the game explode if not dealt with. Well—"explode" is a bit dramatic. It just wouldn't allow any more scenery to be added to the game if not fixed. Lest it explode.
(...)
In this thread, which shares a fake screenshot from Mod Ash claiming the doom of RuneScape, Jagex mod Nin actually chimes in and writes: "You joke, but we are imminently going to run out of IDs to assign to models and scenery so we need to do a bunch of work to stop the game exploding soon."

I wish he had the fake mask in the video, not just the thumbnail.

I'm all for joke videos but I have to admit that his comment when doing 30 to 60fps and calling it a "slideshow" really triggered me. A slideshow at 30fps? For real? Oh boy, that's something only someone that has never had to deal with mid/low-end parts could say.

Slideshow my arse!

Honestly, before watching the video I was hoping he'll be wearing Jensen's face mask - you know, like Jim Sterling with David Cage's face mask back in his famous Emotions, Polygons and Ellen Page rant.

But yeah, 30fps as slideshow is a bit much - I prefer not to play anything at 30fps, but it still doesn't bother me enough (especially when it comes to Zelda) to declare it a slideshow.

That said, I'm glad that more and more influential channels are calling out the usual suspect's false marketing and PR nonsense, though I'm sure that Jensen is already looking forward to advertising MFG 120x mode for next update...;P

Paper Mario 64 Total Conversion, Star Nova, Has Been Released
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/paper-mario-64-total-conversion-star-nova-has-been-released/
YouTube’s ‘NicTube’ has released a new total conversion mod for Paper Mario 64 that PC gamers can enjoy via emulators, called Paper Mario Star Nova. This is a huge total conversion mod for this Nintendo 64 Mario game. So, let’s take a closer look at it.
Paper Mario Star Nova is a full-scale story-based Paper Mario 64 mod. It has multiple new chapters, an entirely new lore and story, and a brand new world. It also comes with new characters, new partners, new enemies/bosses, and over 70 new star pieces.
Since this is a mod for Paper Mario 64, you’ll need its ROM to run it. As I said, this is a mod for the N64 game. I’m saying this because in the past few months, we’ve seen a lot of unofficial PC ports of numerous Nintendo 64 games. This isn’t the case here.
Anyway, you can go ahead and download Paper Mario Star Nova from this link. Below, you can also find its official trailer. This should give you an idea of what you can expect from it. So, make sure to watch it before downloading it.

Gameplay Overhaul Mod Released for BioShock 2 Remastered
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/gameplay-overhaul-mod-released-for-bioshock-2-remastered/
Last month, we informed you about a gameplay overhaul mod for BioShock Remastered. And today, I’m happy to report that a similar mod is available for BioShock 2 Remastered.
Created by VoidCrownStudios, The Wrath Of Lamb brings numerous weapon and Plasmid changes. Moreover, it reworks the game’s economy, it unlocks the vending machines, and it multiples enemy spawns.
The result is a fresh experience for both new and returning players. It’s a cool mod for those who have not recently played BioShock 2 Remastered. By using it, you’ll get a somewhat different experience from the one you originally had. Yes, the story will remain the same, but this is a cool gameplay mod to use in your second or third playthrough.
The mod offers three options for increasing the number of enemies. You can choose between 5X, 10X, and 20X. That 20X multiplier can make the game feel crazy. It’s for those who want an additional channel. You can get a taste of it in the trailer I’ve included below. It’s cool to see Rapture filled with all those enemies.

One mad modder got the entirety of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind running on Fallout 4's in-game Pip-Boy
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fallout/one-mad-modder-got-the-entirety-of-the-elder-scrolls-3-morrowind-running-on-fallout-4s-in-game-pip-boy/
Days before committing the world historic sin of putting quest markers into The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, modder RPGKing117 already earned himself a pardon: He created a mod that lets you play The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind on the in-game Pip-Boy and computer terminals of Fallout 4.
RPGKing117 has a nice demonstration of the mod up on YouTube, showing it running on a stationary computer terminal rather than Fallout 4's iconic wrist-mounted menu system. It is, perhaps, not the optimal way to play Morrowind.
Forget the low resolution: That dark, monochrome screen is gonna be the real dealbreaker for a 100-hour playthrough. You'll also need a computer powerful enough to run both games at once—not an absurd luxury these days, but this might not work on Steam Deck.
But who cares about that, nerd? A game within a game is one of the funniest bits you can pull in the medium, by my reckoning, and there is an undeniable anarchic joy to seeing the 2002 RPG rendered in this way. My favorite little touch: The in-game cassettes with Morrowind's box art that you can pick up and drag around, maybe decorate your house in Sanctuary with.
