The second part of the Friday gaming news:
Battlefield 6's 'Very Aggressive Listening' audio mode sounded like a joke until I turned it on, and now I can't go back
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/battlefield-6-war-tapes-very-aggressive-listening-mode/
One of the key selling points of Battlefield has always been immersion, a vague buzzword that you just kind of know means it feels atmospheric, another oddly ephemeral phrase when it comes to games. Having a tank round the corner and start blasting the front off the building I'm hiding in is intense. Battlefield 6 is no different.
Of course, the "next generation of Battlefield" comes with the usual bells and whistles: upgraded destruction, an ever-more immersive soundscape, yada yada yada. And they weren't kidding; Battlefield 6 sounds incredible. But there's one setting hidden in the audio menu that, when you change it, you won't ever go back.
Sony has seen enough: 3 years after acquiring Bungie, Sony says the days of independence are 'getting lighter' and its future 'is to become part of PlayStation Studios'
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/sony-has-seen-enough-3-years-after-acquiring-bungie-sony-says-the-days-of-independence-are-over-and-its-future-is-to-become-part-of-playstation-studios/
When Sony announced its intention to acquire Destiny 2 developer Bungie in January 2022 for an eye-watering $.3.6 billion, it said the company would be "an independent subsidiary" under the direction of the studio's then-current management team, and that it would remain a multiplatform studio with the option "to self-publish and reach players wherever they choose to play." Destiny 2 seemed like a perpetual money machine, after all, and Sony saw no reason to fix what wasn't broken.
But fast-forward through three very rough years for Bungie, and things aren't nearly so rosy. And now it seems that Sony has seen enough, as Sony chief financial officer and corporate executive officer Lin Tao said during the company's recent quarterly earnings call that those days of independence are coming to an end.
>> We all knew it was going to happen sooner or later.
As tag fighters face a resurgence, Tekken's director says it won't be joining in on the fun: 'There's just so much more knowledge that's necessary to enjoy the game'

Anyone hoping for a Tekken Tag Tournament 3 as the genre's popularity ramps up once more is going to be disappointed, since Bandai Namco has unfortunately shredded any hope of it happening.
Marathon will be out before March 2026, says Sony CFO—but 'this is not a commitment'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/marathon-will-be-out-before-march-2026-says-sony-cfo-but-this-is-not-a-commitment/
Marathon's grand unveiling earlier this year did not, I suspect, go as Sony hoped. Gameplay reveals were met with overwhelmingly negative reaction. Then, a scandal over stolen art and a subsequent report of morale at the studio in "free fall". Finally, an indefinite delay, with a new release date to be announced in the autumn.

For now, at least, the party line hasn't changed. During a Q&A following a financial report (via VGC), CFO Lin Tao not only reaffirmed that a new release date will come in the autumn, but also that "we expect the launch to happen within the fiscal year".
Embracer brings original Guitar Hero publisher RedOctane back from the dead for 'the next evolution in rhythm gaming'
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/embracer-brings-original-guitar-hero-publisher-redoctane-back-from-the-dead-for-the-next-evolution-in-rhythm-gaming/
15 years after being shuttered by Activision, original Guitar Hero publisher RedOctane is back, with the slightly changed name of RedOctane Games and now a part of catastrophe conglomerate Embracer Group. The revived studio is being headed up by Simon Ebejer, the production director on numerous Guitar Hero games developed by Neversoft, and also has original RedOctane founder Charles and Kai Huang on board as advisors.
It looks like Microsoft's cuts got another one: Avalanche has stopped work on its 1970s smuggling sim Contraband to 'evaluate the project's future'

A month after Microsoft laid off 9,000 employees, cancelled multiple game projects, and closed The Initiative, Avalanche Studios says work on its 1970s-themed smuggling sim Contraband—which was being developed in partnership with Xbox—has been halted.
I cannot believe one of the best indie games of all time just got new DLC 17 years later
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/i-cannot-believe-one-of-the-best-indie-games-of-all-time-just-got-new-dlc-17-years-later/
There are those games I fondly remember from my school days, and then there are those games I remember being a problem from my school days. Castle Crashers, first released on the Xbox 360 in August 2008, was nearly one of the latter (…)
I am now 37 years old, haven't played Castle Crashers in ages, and so closely associate it with that specific time in my life that I don't know how to process the following information: 17 years later, there is new Castle Crashers DLC. This update didn't actually come out of nowhere—the indie team at The Behemoth actually announced it in June 2024, but you can't expect my brain to remember things that happened a year ago; it ran out of space back in 2008 after permanently filing the Castle Crashers deer that propelled itself across the screen by shitting.
Anyway, The Behemoth released the new Painter Boss Paradise DLC on Wednesday, which for just $4 adds the following:
Finally, I can get a straight flush with cabbages: Our favorite idle farming sim just got a Balatro crossover
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/sim/finally-i-can-get-a-straight-flush-with-cabbages-our-favorite-idle-farming-sim-just-got-a-balatro-crossover/
Balatro is beginning to seem like less of a game and more like an all-encompassing cosmic force that stretches along inscrutable dimensions until everything is folded within it and reshaped into clowns, cards, and hypnotic chillwave. Today, we have yet more evidence thanks to new crossover content for Rusty's Retirement, the delightful robotic farming idler that is now firmly within Jimbo's uncanny grasp.
Just 2 weeks after its release, this Diablo-style roguelike has already reworked its entire campaign to please action RPG fans looking for a challenge

I've been hooked on Hell Clock since it was released last month. Few games nail what I want out of a loot-driven action RPG like Diablo, and Hell Clock pulls it off while also having the roguelike-driven improvisation of games like Hades.
Hell Clock is a game that wants you to break it, and its only flaw is that there's nowhere to go after you've finished the campaign. Before the newest patch, it only had a mode called Ascension that would let you restart the campaign from scratch with an increased difficulty.
The developers at Rogue Snail posted an update not long after the game's release saying they were aware that players like me would love a way to face tougher monsters with our established characters. The studio wasn't lying when it said that it was prepared to move fast with updates, because that major extension to the campaign is here, just two weeks after Hell Clock came out.
'Consumers are not okay with okay': Take-Two boss says BioShock 4 is taking so long because the company's goal is 'to make the best entertainment, not necessarily the most entertainment'

Six years after BioShock 4 was first confirmed, it is not going well: Bloomberg said last week that the game had failed a recent development review, leading to the removal of studio head Kelley Gilmore and shift of creative director Hogarth de la Plante to a publishing role, and a planned overhaul of parts of the game itself. Despite those struggles, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick promises, unequivocally, that it's not at risk of cancellation.
