The second part of the Friday gaming news:

Battlefield 6's 'Very Aggressive Listening' audio mode sounded like a joke until I turned it on, and now I can't go back
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/battlefield-6-war-tapes-very-aggressive-listening-mode/
One of the key selling points of Battlefield has always been immersion, a vague buzzword that you just kind of know means it feels atmospheric, another oddly ephemeral phrase when it comes to games. Having a tank round the corner and start blasting the front off the building I'm hiding in is intense. Battlefield 6 is no different.
Of course, the "next generation of Battlefield" comes with the usual bells and whistles: upgraded destruction, an ever-more immersive soundscape, yada yada yada. And they weren't kidding; Battlefield 6 sounds incredible. But there's one setting hidden in the audio menu that, when you change it, you won't ever go back.

Sony has seen enough: 3 years after acquiring Bungie, Sony says the days of independence are 'getting lighter' and its future 'is to become part of PlayStation Studios'
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/sony-has-seen-enough-3-years-after-acquiring-bungie-sony-says-the-days-of-independence-are-over-and-its-future-is-to-become-part-of-playstation-studios/
When Sony announced its intention to acquire Destiny 2 developer Bungie in January 2022 for an eye-watering $.3.6 billion, it said the company would be "an independent subsidiary" under the direction of the studio's then-current management team, and that it would remain a multiplatform studio with the option "to self-publish and reach players wherever they choose to play." Destiny 2 seemed like a perpetual money machine, after all, and Sony saw no reason to fix what wasn't broken.
But fast-forward through three very rough years for Bungie, and things aren't nearly so rosy. And now it seems that Sony has seen enough, as Sony chief financial officer and corporate executive officer Lin Tao said during the company's recent quarterly earnings call that those days of independence are coming to an end.
>> We all knew it was going to happen sooner or later.

As tag fighters face a resurgence, Tekken's director says it won't be joining in on the fun: 'There's just so much more knowledge that's necessary to enjoy the game'

Anyone hoping for a Tekken Tag Tournament 3 as the genre's popularity ramps up once more is going to be disappointed, since Bandai Namco has unfortunately shredded any hope of it happening.

Marathon will be out before March 2026, says Sony CFO—but 'this is not a commitment'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/marathon-will-be-out-before-march-2026-says-sony-cfo-but-this-is-not-a-commitment/
Marathon's grand unveiling earlier this year did not, I suspect, go as Sony hoped. Gameplay reveals were met with overwhelmingly negative reaction. Then, a scandal over stolen art and a subsequent report of morale at the studio in "free fall". Finally, an indefinite delay, with a new release date to be announced in the autumn.
(...)
For now, at least, the party line hasn't changed. During a Q&A following a financial report (via VGC), CFO Lin Tao not only reaffirmed that a new release date will come in the autumn, but also that "we expect the launch to happen within the fiscal year".

Embracer brings original Guitar Hero publisher RedOctane back from the dead for 'the next evolution in rhythm gaming'
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/embracer-brings-original-guitar-hero-publisher-redoctane-back-from-the-dead-for-the-next-evolution-in-rhythm-gaming/
15 years after being shuttered by Activision, original Guitar Hero publisher RedOctane is back, with the slightly changed name of RedOctane Games and now a part of catastrophe conglomerate Embracer Group. The revived studio is being headed up by Simon Ebejer, the production director on numerous Guitar Hero games developed by Neversoft, and also has original RedOctane founder Charles and Kai Huang on board as advisors.

It looks like Microsoft's cuts got another one: Avalanche has stopped work on its 1970s smuggling sim Contraband to 'evaluate the project's future'
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/it-looks-like-microsofts-cuts-got-another-one-avalanche-has-stopped-work-on-its-1970s-smuggling-sim-contraband-to-evaluate-the-projects-future/
A month after Microsoft laid off 9,000 employees, cancelled multiple game projects, and closed The Initiative, Avalanche Studios says work on its 1970s-themed smuggling sim Contraband—which was being developed in partnership with Xbox—has been halted.

I cannot believe one of the best indie games of all time just got new DLC 17 years later
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/i-cannot-believe-one-of-the-best-indie-games-of-all-time-just-got-new-dlc-17-years-later/
There are those games I fondly remember from my school days, and then there are those games I remember being a problem from my school days. Castle Crashers, first released on the Xbox 360 in August 2008, was nearly one of the latter (…)
I am now 37 years old, haven't played Castle Crashers in ages, and so closely associate it with that specific time in my life that I don't know how to process the following information: 17 years later, there is new Castle Crashers DLC. This update didn't actually come out of nowhere—the indie team at The Behemoth actually announced it in June 2024, but you can't expect my brain to remember things that happened a year ago; it ran out of space back in 2008 after permanently filing the Castle Crashers deer that propelled itself across the screen by shitting.
Anyway, The Behemoth released the new Painter Boss Paradise DLC on Wednesday, which for just $4 adds the following:

Finally, I can get a straight flush with cabbages: Our favorite idle farming sim just got a Balatro crossover
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/sim/finally-i-can-get-a-straight-flush-with-cabbages-our-favorite-idle-farming-sim-just-got-a-balatro-crossover/
Balatro is beginning to seem like less of a game and more like an all-encompassing cosmic force that stretches along inscrutable dimensions until everything is folded within it and reshaped into clowns, cards, and hypnotic chillwave. Today, we have yet more evidence thanks to new crossover content for Rusty's Retirement, the delightful robotic farming idler that is now firmly within Jimbo's uncanny grasp.

Just 2 weeks after its release, this Diablo-style roguelike has already reworked its entire campaign to please action RPG fans looking for a challenge
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/just-2-weeks-after-its-release-this-diablo-style-roguelike-has-already-reworked-its-entire-campaign-to-please-action-rpg-fans-looking-for-a-challenge/
I've been hooked on Hell Clock since it was released last month. Few games nail what I want out of a loot-driven action RPG like Diablo, and Hell Clock pulls it off while also having the roguelike-driven improvisation of games like Hades.
Hell Clock is a game that wants you to break it, and its only flaw is that there's nowhere to go after you've finished the campaign. Before the newest patch, it only had a mode called Ascension that would let you restart the campaign from scratch with an increased difficulty.
The developers at Rogue Snail posted an update not long after the game's release saying they were aware that players like me would love a way to face tougher monsters with our established characters. The studio wasn't lying when it said that it was prepared to move fast with updates, because that major extension to the campaign is here, just two weeks after Hell Clock came out.

'Consumers are not okay with okay': Take-Two boss says BioShock 4 is taking so long because the company's goal is 'to make the best entertainment, not necessarily the most entertainment'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/consumers-are-not-okay-with-okay-take-two-boss-says-bioshock-4-is-taking-so-long-because-the-companys-goal-is-to-make-the-best-entertainment-not-necessarily-the-most-entertainment/
Six years after BioShock 4 was first confirmed, it is not going well: Bloomberg said last week that the game had failed a recent development review, leading to the removal of studio head Kelley Gilmore and shift of creative director Hogarth de la Plante to a publishing role, and a planned overhaul of parts of the game itself. Despite those struggles, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick promises, unequivocally, that it's not at risk of cancellation.

And yes, today there’s a third part of the gaming news:

Total War: Shogun started out as 'a quick and cheerful B-grade RTS' to help Creative Assembly raise funds for its dream game—an RPG based on Monkey: Journey to the West
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/total-war-shogun-started-out-as-a-quick-and-cheerful-b-grade-rts-to-help-creative-assembly-raise-funds-for-its-dream-game-an-rpg-based-on-monkey-journey-to-the-west/
It's hard to remember Creative Assembly wasn't always synonymous with the Total War series, and yet, once upon a time, they were so well-known for sports games that pivoting away was seen as a risk. That's part of the story told in a retrospective video about the making of Total War: Shogun put together to coincide with its 25th anniversary. It makes for a fascinating insight into how different things were for the studio at the end of the 20th century.

We might actually have a tenuous Silksong release date, absolutely nobody on my team believes me, and I think I can hear Hornet in my walls
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/we-might-actually-have-a-tenuous-silksong-release-date-absolutely-nobody-on-my-team-believes-me-and-i-think-i-can-hear-hornet-in-my-walls/
OK, everybody stay calm. What do you mean you're calm? Well I'm also calm! I'm totally fine and not-at-all losing my unsteady grip on my own mind. We might genuinely have a (tentative, tenuous) Silksong release date. Naturally, it hasn't come from Team Cherry, but it's the strongest dose of cope we've had so far.

GTA publisher boss says he's 'running scared' despite billions in the bank and a GTA 6-sized financial nuke on the horizon: 'We are looking over our shoulders'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/grand-theft-auto/gta-publisher-boss-says-hes-running-scared-despite-billions-in-the-bank-and-a-gta-6-sized-financial-nuke-on-the-horizon-we-are-looking-over-our-shoulders/
Strauss Zelnick—CEO of GTA publisher Take-Two—has revised his expectations. On the back of stronger-than-expected financial results for its first quarter of financial year 2026 (which takes place, in our mortal realm, in the actual year 2025), the company now anticipates making between $6.1 and $6.2 billion for the overall financial year, up from its prior guidance of $5.95 to $6.05 billion. Which must be nice.
And yet in a chat with The Game Business, Zelnick says the general operating procedure at the corporate C-suite is to act like you're being pursued by wolves. "We are looking over our shoulders. We are running scared," said the CEO.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's director had 2 scrapped scenes from the game's ending, gives props to mocap actors who 'saved' it at the last minute

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is maybe one of my favourite games of this year—it's certainly in the running—which I hope reassures you that I mean this with all the love in the world. It surprises me not one itty-bitty bit that Guillaume Broche, creative director of the game, says he "likes really sad stories".
That's per a recent interview Broche had with BehindTheVoice (seen below). Spoilers for the game's endings to follow.

Worse, Arc A770,A750 and B580 getting outsold by a... GT 210?!?? And all of them outselling the RTX 4060, the bestselling GPU of last gen???

Strange list indeed. But that's the problem with listings like that, not every GPU is sold for gaming.

Whether it's to give a system more display outputs to drive more monitors or for a simple HTPC, to name a couple of examples, some of those old cards have a real purpose to some people, and since neither Nvidia nor AMD make these kind of low end GPUs anymore, they'll keep selling until they're no longer made.

While I get that too, I would have expected them still to get something more modern than a GT 210, especially when a 710 is just $7 more, probably has much better driver support now and is 10x more powerful. By comparison GT 730 and 1030 are way too expensive!

AMD and NVidia still kinda make these GPUs, but they put them into professional cards. Like the Radeon Pro series for instance where we had the W7400 in the news just a couple days ago.

It's hard to guess why people do or buy certain things.

I guess that those two cards were so popular that it's easier to find reviews or other info about them, prompting users to go that route, which in turn makes sales numbers higher, prompting more users to notice them, and so on.

Maybe, I have no idea. Unless people thought that it was related to Turing due to starting with a 2...

Also, while I didn't really think about it at first, I'm surprised that those GPUs can even still be found in such numbers over a decade after their release. I guess most of them are used sales now, but still...

SALES/PLAYER COUNTS & DEALS

The Battlefield 6 beta has broken Call of Duty's Steam player count record, surging past half a million concurrents
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/the-battlefield-6-beta-has-broken-call-of-dutys-steam-player-count-record-surging-past-half-a-million-concurrents/
First spotted by Battlefield Bulletin on Twitter, Battlefield 6's open beta is doing spectacularly well on Steam: Around 500,000 concurrent players at the time of writing, down from a peak of 521,079 according to SteamDB. That puts the BF6 beta at 18th place for peak concurrents in Steam history, two spots ahead of the unified Call of Duty app's peak of 491,670 players in November 2022.
Some caveats on the Call of Duty comparison: Steam concurrents never show the whole picture for multiplatform games, and even on PC, CoD's numbers are complicated by Battle.net and especially Game Pass, which assuredly blunted Black Ops 6's Steam peak last year.
But this is still an insanely impressive showing for an open beta, and more supporting evidence that the recently rather one-sided CoD-Battlefield rivalry could be a real race this year. PCG FPS expert Morgan Park certainly thinks so on quality grounds, while former Blizzard president Mike Ybara seems to be rooting against his former team with prognostications in favor of Battlefield 6.

Valve's superfans are back to break the player concurrent record for Portal, but the challenge may be steeper than anyone has realised
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/puzzle/valves-superfans-are-back-to-break-the-player-concurrent-record-for-portal-but-the-challenge-may-be-steeper-than-anyone-has-realised/
I assumed that everyone with access to a PC would have played Portal at this point, but it seems this is far from the case, at least if Portal's all-time concurrent players are anything to go by. According to Steam Charts, the record for Steam player concurrents stands at just 3,370 players, which is apparently a quirk of the game launching before Steam kept accurate player records.
Later today, a group of Valve superfans hopes to change this. Valve fansite LambdaGeneration, in association with major Valve YouTubers Noclick and Radiation Hazard, is running an event called #RememberPortal, urging players to band together and push Portal into an all-new dimension of concurrent player counts.
>> The article is from yesterday and the Steam Charts record… hasn’t changed. Mission failed? By the way, Portal's record at steamdb is over twenty thousand players.

Mortal Kombat 1 has cemented itself as the best-selling fighting game of this generation despite ending support after just 20 months: 'We're still committed to refining MK1 to be our most balanced game'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fighting/mortal-kombat-1-has-cemented-itself-as-the-best-selling-fighting-game-of-this-generation-despite-ending-support-after-just-20-months-were-still-committed-to-refining-mk1-to-be-our-most-balanced-game/
Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon promises NetherRealm is "still committed to refining MK1 to be our most balanced game" after surpassing six million sales… despite officially ending major support for it nearly three months ago.
Mortal Kombat 1's most recent sales announcement puts it ahead of both Street Fighter 6—which reported five million sales two months ago—and Tekken 8, which hit a three million sales milestone five months ago.
It makes sense that it's the most popular of the three. Mortal Kombat has always attracted a larger and more casual audience than its competition—not to say there isn't a competitive scene, there certainly is—and has the numbers to back that up. It's still significantly less than previous entry Mortal Kombat 11, however, which managed to shift over 15 million copies by 2022.

More than 2 million people grabbed co-op roguelike Guntouchables when it was free for 24 hours
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/roguelike/more-than-2-million-people-grabbed-co-op-roguelike-guntouchables-when-it-was-free-for-24-hours/
"Launching free for 24 hours was a huge bet for us," Guntouchable developer Game Swing says, but it certainly got eyes on the game. More than two million people claimed it in a single day.
Guntouchables is a slapstick co-op roguelike that on any other day would have probably passed me by. But I am one of the more than two million folks who picked it up.
Have I played it? No. I am just Scottish and frugal, so of course I snatched up a freebie. Others have actually gone the extra mile and fired the game up.
According to SteamDB, Guntouchables peaked at just over 16,000 concurrent players, which is a lot more than a co-op roguelike from an unknown studio would have enjoyed had it not been free for a day.
>> I’m not Scottish, but I also claimed it and haven’t tried it yet. What about you?

The Steam performance overlay will finally show CPU temps but it will require kernel access to do so
https://www.pcgamer.com/software/the-steam-performance-overlay-will-finally-show-cpu-temps-but-it-will-require-kernel-access-to-do-so/
I'm not usually a fan of different software having their own solutions for just about every problem under the sun, but I tend to give Valve a pass because, well, just about every PC gamer uses Steam. So the more that can be baked into the platform the better, I say. Which is why I say yippee (or something) to even more hardware monitoring goodness being baked into the Steam Performance Monitor.
A recent Steam beta client update announces: "Performance Monitor now supports CPU temperature on Windows and Linux. On Windows this requires a kernel mode driver, and there is an optional to disable if you don't want that. The driver is only installed and running when Performance Monitor is visible at full CPU detail levels and only if you don't disable the driver in the In-Game settings."
>> I’d prefer it to be disabled by default and making the user decide to enable it or not but, then again, I don’t use the overlay.

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

GTA 5 Enhanced Edition Just Got Maps from Forza Motorsport 4, Assetto Corsa, and Driv3r
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/gta-5-enhanced-edition-just-got-maps-from-forza-horizon-4-assetto-corsa-and-driv3r
GTA 5 fans, here’s something cool for you. Modder FVMods has shared three awesome new maps you can try in GTA 5 Enhanced Edition. These mods bring locations from other popular games right into GTA 5. So, let’s take a look at them, shall we?
The first map comes from Forza Motorsport 4, allowing you to explore the Fujimi Kaido race track. The second is from Assetto Corsa. Midnight Shuto is a mod of the city of Tokyo with expressways, making it great for racing-themed gameplay. The third map is from the classic game Driv3r, letting you revisit a nostalgic location from the early 2000s.
With these maps, you can race, explore, and enjoy GTA 5 in a whole new way. This is a cool way to make GTA 5 feel more refreshed. From what I can see, these maps do not have any specific missions. So, don’t expect these mods to be DLC-sized expansions. They simply bring the maps I mentioned above to Grand Theft Auto 5. So, make sure to temper your expectations.
>> The article has three videos, one for each map.

Modder ‘Dorin’ has released the first episode of a DLC-sized fan expansion for Fallout 4, called TimeyWimey. So, let’s take a closer look at it.
This first episode comes with new worldspaces, interiors, a basketball game, and a new power armor. The mod focuses on exploration and storytelling, and not on heavy battles. Plus, it includes a number of easter eggs that players can find.
In total, players can expect six episodes. The modder is now working on the second episode, though there is no ETA on when it will come out.
As with a lot of DLC-sized fan mods, TimeyWimey is not perfect. So, don’t expect to be blown away by its quality. After all, it’s a mod created by a single person. Still, since it adds new free content to the game, it’s something that may interest a lot of Fallout 4 fans.

Cyberpunk 2077 just got a fully-featured apartment rent system
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/cyberpunk-2077-just-got-a-fully-featured-apartment-rent-system
Modder ‘Dark Fortune Teller’ has released a cool new mod for Cyberpunk 2077 called Eviction Notice. This mod adds a full apartment rent system, new characters you can meet through text messages, and some light quest content to enjoy.
The goal of this mod is to add more story and challenge without taking over the whole game. In the early game, you’ll feel the pressure of making sure you have enough money to pay rent each week. You might even choose to move out of Megabuilding H10 to save some eddies. You’ll also have to decide how many apartments you want to rent at the same time.
At the start of each rent period (7 days by default), you’ll get a text message from the landlord of each property you currently rent. You’ll be able to pay your rent via text. If you fail to pay your rent on time, you’ll incur late payment fees each day until your rent is paid. The large, up-front cost you paid to rent an apartment in the base game is now the security deposit. You’ll still pay this when renting an apartment. This deposit is refundable if you decide to move out of an apartment. If you are evicted, they hang on to the deposit.
Eviction Notice adds a new landlord for every apartment you rent. Some are real people, and others are soulless chatbots. Each landlord will send you a message when you start renting from them, and at other times – like when rent is due or late. Every landlord has their own personality, and some even have a few surprises for you.
There’s also a Loyalty Quest you can do for Avery Clarke at Glenview Lofts. The quest, called Everything In Its Right Place, starts after you make 2 rent payments to Avery. It’s a very short quest, but if you finish it, you’ll get a monthly rent discount and the option to buy the Glenview Loft apartment forever. This feature is still being worked on, and more Loyalty Quests for other landlords will be added in future updates.
