Crysis was definitely GPU limited. This is with a stock Core 2 Duo at 2.66 GHz.

You can argue that higher settings do have more CPU limitations due to increased draw calls but they were still going ~ 50 fps on these same higher-end cards (which all cost less than 400 dollars back then...)

Later it would look much more CPU limited as people pursued higher framerates with next-gen GPUs but that's because it was very very single-threaded.

Some parts with many enemies or the Ascension level were crazy CPU intensive. The last time I played it was with a 3770k and it dropped below 60 in a CPU limit sometimes. Gotta test it with a ZEN 3 at 4.6 GHz.

The GPUs weren't tested in a CPU limit ofc. Like many used the intro in the plane to test GPUs. And yes, even at launch it was in a GPU limit most of the time, but poor performance was fixable with lower settings if you had GPUs of the time. The CPU issues weren't really.

Steam's big update has left beta: now everyone can pin notes, videos, and web pages to the screen while they play
https://www.pcgamer.com/steams-big-update-with-has-left-beta-now-everyone-can-pin-notes-videos-and-web-pages-to-the-screen-while-they-play/
Since late April, Valve has been beta testing a refresh of the Steam client that's now available to everyone. As the announcement warns, "The most impactful changes in this update aren't immediately visible; much of the work went into changing how we share code across the Steam Desktop Client, Big Picture mode, and Steam Deck." Some things are visible, however, including "updated dialogs, menus, fonts, and colors", as well as changes to notifications, the screenshot manager, and especially the in-game overlay.
The overlay that pops up when you press shift+tab while in-game has a new UI, with a toolbar that lets you check a game's achievements, guides, and forum as well as bring up your friends list for chat and a web browser, all in separate windows that can be pinned to your screen so they remain visible when you close the overlay. You can change their locations and opacity, meaning you can keep that walkthrough open in the corner while you play or just watch Critical Role while grinding without needing to have a second screen.

SF6’s first nude mods cover both female and male characters. So, PC gamers can currently find mods for Chun-Li, Yuri, Lily, Manon, Honda, Zangief and Blanka. Surprisingly enough, there isn’t yet a nude mod for Cammy. However, you can find a micro-bikini mod for both her and Kimberly.
>> As usual, the article doesn't have links to those mods, only a link to the Nexus Mods page for SF 6. But, there's a video of the mods in action...

Squanch Games CEO and studio director Mike Fridley has announced the first DLC for the hugely popular High on Life, an OTT cartoon shooter where the guns talk and the humour is love it or hate it. It's set two years after the original game ends and going for something of a vibe change to horror, with the name High on Knife.

Grand Theft Auto players 'rightfully pretty pissed' after Rockstar commits around 200 acts of grand theft auto
https://www.pcgamer.com/grand-theft-auto-players-rightfully-pretty-pissed-after-rockstar-commits-around-200-acts-of-grand-theft-auto/
Grand Theft Auto Online's latest update, San Andreas Mercenaries, arrived yesterday and adds a new type of mission, various cosmetic content, and a bunch of quality of life changes. What's got the fans angry, though, is what's happened to hundreds of vehicles.
Rockstar giveth with this free update but has also done quite a job of taketh-ing away around 200 cars and motorcycles from the in-game stores. To add insult to injury, a bunch of them have now been made available to GTA+ subscribers, the game's premium offering, through the Vinewood Car Club (which only GTA+ players can access).
>> To add salt to the injury, I want to remind you that GTA+ is not available on PC.

It sounds like CD Projekt is rolling right into the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel when Phantom Liberty is finished
https://www.pcgamer.com/it-sounds-like-cd-projekt-is-rolling-right-into-the-cyberpunk-2077-sequel-when-phantom-liberty-is-finished/
CD Projekt Red brought Cyberpunk 2077 expansion Phantom Liberty to this year's Summer Game Fest, and Morgan was immediately smitten with its new area, Dogtown. (He also keeps calling Idris Elba his new best friend, and it's so sweet none of us have had the heart to correct him yet). From that demo we learned about the latest in CD Projekt's ongoing march to patch over Cyberpunk's glaring flaws, including new police AI with a GTA-style notoriety system, a skill tree for combat augments, and expanded car combat. But what comes after Phantom Liberty?
According to an interview with Bloomberg, director Gabe Amatangelo will be moving on to the sequel.

7 stupidly specific details I spotted while watching Starfield Direct frame-by-frame
https://www.pcgamer.com/7-stupidly-specific-details-i-spotted-while-watching-starfield-direct-frame-by-frame/
After a year of mining screenshots and details from last summer's Starfield gameplay reveal, we finally have a motherlode of new footage to pore over while we wait for that September 6 launch date to roll around. Of course, we've already highlighted plenty of the major gameplay elements we learned about Starfield from the presentation, but now that the space dust has settled it's time to really dig really deep. I've scoured the Direct for the nerdiest stuff you might have missed on your first (or 40th) watch. We're talking specific sandwich recipes, perk minutia, and the hunt for some guy's mysterious beans.

The bad news is that it's not going to be available for PC players.

The Tokyo-based studio Grasshopper Manufacture is celebrating its 25th anniversary and as part of that has put on its first-ever Grasshopper Direct. As the name suggests, this was somewhat tongue-in-cheek rather than immaculate executives crisply clapping us through game reveals and new trailers. You know what that means, folks, a new season (of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2) is here, and it's bringing all sorts of changes (to the maps and gameplay of the hit Activision-published FPS) with it. I honestly fail to see why is Intel ditching the "i". It will make it harder to talk about the different processors among us, tho we may still use the term for convenience (like we say UPlay and not UbiConnect).

The Ultra and not Ultra parts may just be Intel's new way to market the "K/KF" processors.

Impressive video, Tall.

If they had only changed the i9 to Ultra, it would have been fine, but Ultra 5 means something like "extreme midrange", so it makes not much sense.

If they only replace the K/KF parts with the Ultra branding, then it makes some sense, as their TDP values have become truly meaningless by now, so they could use the Ultra branding to make them work outside of those constrains and have even the most tech-averse clients and customers understand that those are really high-power chips, something that the K branding doesn't convey that easily to those guys.

The top-selling game on Steam right now is a new 254-player FPS made by 4 people
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-top-selling-game-on-steam-right-now-is-a-new-254-player-fps-made-by-4-people/
There's a good chance you've never heard of the game that's currently blowing up the Steam charts. BattleBit Remastered, released in early access today, is a 254-player FPS that looks like Roblox but plays like Battlefield. At just $15, currently the best-selling paid game on Steam, sitting right behind CS:GO on the global top seller list. Unsurprisingly, it's also in the top ten most-played games right now.
BattleBit's top spot is impressive given its low price and the fact that Steam ranks top sellers by revenue, not copies sold. That means BattleBit is currently making more money than Warzone 2, Starfield, PUBG, and the Steam Deck. Not bad for the four-person team at OkiGames, who's been working on BattleBit in various forms for seven years.
After playing an hour of BattleBit, it's easy to see why it's an instant success. It's a remarkably fun little FPS that's a lot deeper than it looks. It's got the scale, vehicles, and destruction of a modern Battlefield game, but a lot of milsim qualities from Squad are in there too: proximity chat, buildable defensive structures, bleeds that have to be bandaged, and medic class who has the exclusive ability to heal players. It's very accessible to just hop in and play, but harder core than most multiplayer shooters.

Returnal gets a pretty cool Overwatch 2 Tracer Mod
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/returnal-gets-a-pretty-cool-overwatch-2-tracer-mod/
Now here is something really cool. Modder ‘User619’ has released a mod that replaces Returnal’s main protagonist with Tracer from Overwatch 2.
Now as you may have guessed, this is only a character swap mod. In other words, it does not bring any of Tracer’s weapons to the game. That wouldn’t make sense as Returnal relies heavily on its weapons and upgrade system.
Ironically, though, this Overwatch 2 Tracer Mod looks pretty great. I mean, a lot of people have complained about the looks of the main protagonist. And now, you can get a sweet anime girl with a big ass. Sounds like a win, right?
>> There's a twelve minutes video of the mod.

Morrowind mod 'Feminist Nerevarine' lets you side with women more often
https://www.pcgamer.com/morrowind-mod-feminist-nerevarine/
Morrowind is one of the most-modded roleplaying games of all time, and a lot of those mods focus on big sweeping changes like overhauling UI and adding new locations, or rebuilding the whole dang thing, or delightful-yet-absurd technical upgrades like adding footprints.
Others, meanwhile, make smaller tweaks. That's the case with the Feminist Nerevarine mod from AliceL93. The title is a little overblown—it doesn't rewrite Morrowind as a feminist parable—but by changing a few quest options, it highlights the number of times Morrowind didn't give us the option to take a woman's side in a dispute, or even just be polite.
"In some Morrowind quests where there was a conflict between a man and a woman, you didn't have the opportunity to side with the woman," writes AliceL93. "In other quests, a woman required something from you, and if you wanted to refuse it, the game forced you to do so in a rude manner. And there were also quests where a man overstepped the boundaries of a woman, and you didn't have the opportunity to refuse helping him."

Payday 3 dev diary details all the sociopathic stuff you can do with hostages
https://www.pcgamer.com/payday-3-dev-diary-details-all-the-sociopathic-stuff-you-can-do-with-hostages/
Last week's Xbox Games Showcase had the first reveal of the much-anticipated Payday 3, and perhaps the biggest surprise is how restrained Starbreeze has been in making the sequel. The studio clearly understands it has a formula that works, one that has attracted a large and loyal fanbase, and so Payday 3 doesn't take the series open-world or make any massive changes to the formula: instead it looks to be about refining the heists, and enhancing the elements of the game that give it such an exciting rhythm.

Not the tease! Nicolas Cage may be in a Hideo Kojima game
https://www.pcgamer.com/not-the-tease-looks-like-nicolas-cage-may-be-in-a-hideo-kojima-game/
Hollywood maniac-in-chief Nicolas Cage is, it appears, getting into games in a big way. Last month brought the news that Nicolas Cage would play Nicolas Cage starring as Nicolas Cage in Dead by Daylight later this year, which was swiftly followed by a scene-stealing cameo at Summer Games Fest where Cage very sincerely told players that "I want you to know when you're playing the Nic Cage survivor, I want you to know that we're one, that we're fused".
Yuh huh. Well, a certain game director slash movie buff has clearly been watching all this with interest, and he wants a piece of the action. Hideo Kojima is a longtime fan of the actor and yesterday welcomed Cage to Kojima Productions.

Todd Howard, creative overlord of upcoming space-based sandwich-theft sim Starfield, sat down with IGN in the aftermath of last Sunday's Starfield Direct to chat about the game ahead of its September 6 release date. The key takeaway? Space is still big in Starfield, but it's not entirely down to procedural generation.

Wave goodbye to yet another Diablo 4 power levelling trick as Blizzard releases a World Tier-focused hotfix
https://www.pcgamer.com/wave-goodbye-to-yet-another-diablo-4-power-levelling-trick-as-blizzard-releases-a-world-tier-focused-hotfix/
I'm starting to think that Blizzard really isn't keen on all your Diablo 4 power levelling techniques, guys. The company is fresh off of a hotfix that completely defanged the game's juiciest, most XP-laden dungeons to stop you all from running them over and over, but that wasn't enough. Now Blizzard's gone and patched out a trick that would let low-level players reap the benefits of World Tiers they hadn't unlocked yet.

And that's it for the week. Until the next time, I wish you a happy and gaming weekend.

https://wccftech.com/intel-raptor-lake-s-desktop-raptor-lake-hx-laptop-refresh-cpus-to-retain-14th-gen-core-i-branding/

Lots of interesting discussions and talking points. A lot of people certainly have been disappointed about the 30fps but as they show in video, 60fps isn't always possible. They did a cool test where in star citizen, they used a 3600 and 2070 and went to a barren planet where it's hitting 60fps easily. But when they go into the planet that has a big city, it goes down to 17fps cause the 3600 can't keep up. They also talk about a lot of other things so while it's 45 minutes, it's worth a watch if you are looking forward to the game.
