I remember reading somewhere that initially Navi was going to be the last of GCN and then Next Gen would be a completely new arch, but a decision was made to turn Navi into a hybrid between GCN and next gen to ease the transition process, which is also why Navi seems to be so far behind. It would help explain some of the rumors and leaks if true.

I doubt that is the case.
It takes allot of work (And cash) to do such a degree of re-engineering, especially for a single product lineup, AMD isn't exactly rolling in cash.

I would be surprised if it was anything other than another iterative update to Graphics Core Next.

I mean... Back in the Terascale days, AMD did modify VLIW5 and came up with VLIW4 as an interim release, but it was still very much Terascale with all it's caveats.

I mean... At this point I would be very happy to be incorrect, AMD's GPU's right now are pretty terrible in the high-end. (But not bad in the low-end.)

I would mostly agree. I don't think it would be a true hybrid as you say, since the cost and engineering would be significant, and Radeon is already way behind GeForce, so more delays don't seem like a good idea at this point in time. Another step like Vega was would make more sense. AMD doesn't want to disappoint gamers again though, since they way over hyped Vega and didn't deliver, especially at launch, so another situation like that would just hurt them even worse. With the RTX 2000 series not exactly setting the market on fire, now may be the perfect time for a delayed and improved GPU from AMD.

Now what about if the PS5 rumors are true? If PS is working directly with AMD on Navi, that could explain the delay and investment necessary. If PS5 is using Navi, they may very well want some Next Gen Radeon features baked in, much like how when they used Polaris in Pro with some Vega baked in. Based on the launches of Pro and XB1X, the odds are that PS5 should launch before, or at the same time as Scarlet, depending on how long MS waits. PS may be locked into using Navi, whether they launch on schedule or not, and they very well may want as many of those Next Gen Radeon features built in as possible, if they assume that Scarlet will be using Next Gen Radeon tech. Navi with some Next Gen Radeon features built in, will probably allow PS to save on time and cost vs using the full blown new arch, and would allow AMD a better product but with a delayed launch. This would also have to be under the assumption that PS isn't getting it's own distinct version of Navi, and that all Navi silicon will come with the same features PS5 has, otherwise this wouldn't really explain why Navi is behind schedule. If the recent rumors of chiplet APU's has any truth to it, this would make sense if the next gen consoles aren't integrated on die APU's like in the past.

I call BS on the rumours, given what we know already about the power consumption and performance of the 7nm Radeon Instinct. And Navi is another GCN part, so yeah. I remember how it went for the Fiji, Polaris, Vega rumours etc. as well, and this looks exactly the same sort of baseless hype WCCF thrives with.

Well, I'm not jumping on the hype wagon yet with all these rumors. As I said, it's too good to be true.

That said, I was at HardOCP checking the discussion of this video, that is from AdoredTV (Wccftech only reports it), and Kyle Bennett stepped in to comment: "There is a whole lot of reality in that video. A lot. There is a little wrong, but not a lot."

That makes me thing that either he's trolling the members of his own site, or that there's more true than we are willing to accept.

AMD would crank up the prices if they had anything very good in hand. They aren't more than doubling the performance-per-price value of the Polaris / Vega cards from one year to the other, it's too agressive for a company who needs money for R&D etc. so badly to compete.

Compare Ryzen retailing for $500 versus the meek FX for no more than $200, or Vega coming for a mere $500 - $700, way lower than the top GeForce cards, when it's implied the design is quite troublesome to manufacture.

That would be my two cents at least.

You have to take competition into account more so then you have. The GTX 1000 line hasn't really come down in price much because there is no reason. Vega is weak competition so there is little reason to lower the prices of the 1000 series. Just look at what Intel has done to their line up in terms of dropping prices and adding cores. Intel was taking baby steps and as soon as Ryzen showed up, they started jogging and then quickly leaping. If Navi truly competes with the GTX 1000 series for the rumored prices, you can bet Nvidia will drop prices quickly to remain as competitive as necessary.

Not to mention market share and mind share. AMD is like Tesla right now. Mostly still buzz. Tesla is no GM or Toyota though, and Intel and Nvidia are. AMD needs to gain market share, and as quickly as possible, because Intel is going to strike back as soon as they can, which won't be for a while, and with the recent RTX 2000 series falling flat, right now is the time for AMD to put the pedal to the metal and make as much of a dent as possible.

I would say the prices seem a little low for the GPU's. Another $50 at least per SKU would make much more sense, and it could potentially be even more than that, depending on how low Nvidia can afford to go with the 1000 series.

I certainly don't disagree with you that pricing seems too low to believe it, but it could be the one of the things that are "a little wrong" (with the other one being frequencies for the CPUs). Those prices could very well be the cost of the chip to AIB partners, for example.

But we also have to keep in mind that AMD not only needs profits, but also needs to grow its marketshare to stay relevant and prevent more propietary tech from Nvidia like the new Ray Tracing stuff, so it's not hard to believe that AMD will happily trade some profit for extra marketshare, specially if those are mainstream, not high end, products.

I don't know. Their GCN architecture is worse than Maxwell, so they're at least four or five years behind Nvidia at this point, and lagging badly in R&D. Navi is just another refresh  and there's no Jim Keller to make miracles this time around. AMD is just being hyped in the stock market right now because absolutely no analyst seems to know that their 7 nm chips, in fact, won't put them one node ahead of Intel's 10 nm, that it's just a marketing name.

SALES & DEALS

Farming Simulator 19 has sold one million copies worldwide in just 10 days
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/farming-simulator-19-has-sold-one-million-copies-worldwide-in-just-10-days/
Focus Home Interactive has announced that Farming Simulator 19 has sold one million copies worldwide in just 10 days. As the press release reads, and despite a release period shared with multiple blockbuster releases, Farming Simulator has ranked at the top of the software charts in the US, UK, France, Germany, and more.
>> People sure loves farming!

Subnautica will be free on the Epic Store for a limited time
https://www.pcgamer.com/subnautica-is-free-on-the-epic-store-and-its-one-of-our-favorite-games-of-the-year/
After building a spectacularly large audience with Fornite, Epic is turning its game launcher into a Steam-like store—though one that offers developers a larger revenue share. The first games it's offering are now visible on the Epic Store .
First of all, Subnautica and Super Meat Boy, both great games, are going to be free for a limited time, starting later in December. Obviously, by creating an account, downloading Epic's launcher, and redeeming your free games, you become another person they can try to sell stuff to in the future. But also: free games. We recommend Subnautica big time, and it's normally $25, so it's an outstanding freebie if you enjoy singleplayer survival or alien squid encounters.
>> They're starting strong.

Company of Heroes 2 is free to keep this weekend on Steam
https://www.pcgamer.com/company-of-heroes-2-free-steam/
Relic's ace World War 2 RTS Company of Heroes 2 is free on Steam right now to celebrate its fifth anniversary. It's not quite as tight and satisfying as the classic original, but it's still a tense, excellent strategy game, especially in singleplayer and AI skirmish.
The base game features a sizeable Red Army singleplayer campaign and two multiplayer armies. The DLC is also heavily discounted for the duration of the offer, including Western Front Armies and British Forces army expansions, if you enjoy what you play.
>> The DLCs are 75% off.

On the Humble Store, the weekend sale features the Microsoft Studios titles, up to 75% off: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/promo/microsoft-sale/. I didn't know that the latest Zoo Tycoon was available from Steam.

At Fanatical, we find two new deals:

SOFTWARE/DRIVERS

AMD's oddly named 18.12.1.1 driver update adds support for the Epic Games Store
https://www.pcgamer.com/amds-oddly-named-181211-driver-update-adds-support-for-the-epic-games-store/
AMD has begun pushing out a new Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.12.1.1 driver package that is labeled as "optional," though technically all GPU driver updates are optional. In any event, the main thing here—and the only thing, really—is that it preps your Radeon graphics card for Epic's upcoming digital game store.
From what we can tell, this is not a beta release, nor is it a hotfix of sorts. It's just an incremental driver release with an unusually long revision number—there's an extra ".1" at the end that you don't see very often.

Friday news, part two:

Prey: Mooncrash multiplayer update will go live next week
https://www.pcgamer.com/prey-mooncrash-multiplayer-update-will-go-live-next-week/
The Prey: Mooncrash multiplayer mode that Bethesda said would be out this summer will actually arrive on December 11 in a free update called Typhon Hunter. The asymmetric mode is much like a game of hide-and-seek, in which one player takes on the role of Morgan Yu and up to five others become Mimics capable of changing their appearance to that of mundane objects, enabling them to hide in plain sight.

Black Ops 4 is now available for $30 without the Zombies mode
https://www.pcgamer.com/black-ops-4-is-now-available-for-dollar30-without-the-zombies-mode/
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is, in a way, three games. There's the standard multiplayer modes, Blackout (the battle royale mode), and Zombies mode (which is a zombies mode). A new version of the game called Battle Edition snaps a piece off like so much Kit-Kat and offers it to you at a reduced price on Battle.net. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Battle Edition contains the Blackout and standard multiplayer modes for $30 (until January 6, when it'll cost $40). Zombies not included.

Overwatch is really embracing the furry theme this holiday season
https://www.pcgamer.com/overwatch-is-really-embracing-the-furry-theme-this-holiday-season/
Overwatch's Winter Wonderland seasonal event is just around the corner, and Blizzard seems to be really embracing a furry theme this time around. The company has been teasing several of the new skins that will come with the event—earlier this week we saw Zarya take the form of a real Russian bear. Now Lúcio is a fox too.

Ape Out, the ultra-violent ape escape game, finally has a release date
https://www.pcgamer.com/ape-out-the-ultra-violent-ape-escape-game-finally-has-a-release-date/
Joe described Ape Out last year as "a loud, psychedelic gorilla-starring Hotline Miami-a-like," and that pretty well nails it. It's a game about an ape who busts out and busts heads: Simple, fast, furious, and violent, and backed by a frenetic jazz-percussion soundtrack of "drums, cymbals, and decapitations" that reacts to what's happening on screen.

Destiny 2's Dawning event will feature a sled that poops presents
https://www.pcgamer.com/destiny-2s-dawning-event-will-feature-a-sled-that-poops-presents/
Nothing quite says secular celebration like a booster-powered space sled, and so I'm delighted to bring news that the festive event known as the Dawning is returning to Destiny 2. This year's version will see the return of Eva Levante, a human Guardian Outfitter from the original Destiny who survived the war against the Red Legion, but did not reopen her shop when it was over.

Star Control: Origins is getting a four-part season pass that debuts next week
https://www.pcgamer.com/star-control-origins-is-getting-a-four-part-season-pass-that-debuts-next-week/
The interstellar strategy-adventure Star Control: Origins is getting a four-part season pass called Earth Rising that will add "dozens of missions, new alien races, and a variety of ships" to the game. The expansion will leave the job of starship captain essentially unchanged—advance Earth's interests in the galactic community with a deft blend of diplomacy and violence—but the state of the galaxy itself sounds a whole lot more complicated.

Monster Hunter World update roadmap includes 21:9 support and lots of monsters
https://www.pcgamer.com/monster-hunter-world-update-roadmap-includes-219-support-and-lots-of-monsters/
Capcom has released a roadmap for the PC version of Monster Hunter World, and it includes much-requested support for 21:9 ultra wide monitors. That's coming in either January or February next year as part of Title Update 5.1, but there is one caveat: cutscenes won't display at 21:9.

Bethesda confirms up to 65 customers may have had personal data leaked
https://www.pcgamer.com/bethesdas-website-briefly-revealed-customer-support-tickets-and-personal-information/
Update 1: Bethesda has acknowledged and apologized for the incident, saying it revealed "a limited number" of tickets, none of which contained complete credit card information or passwords.
Update 2: Bethesda now says its investigation of the issue shows that "fewer than 123" customer support tickets were vulnerable for the period of the website error, which lasted approximately 45 minutes. Of those tickets, Bethesda says "no more than 65" contained personal information. None of these tickets contained user account passwords or complete credit card numbers. However, the exposed data did include customer names, usernames, emails, addresses, and phone numbers if they were included by the customer in their support tickets. Tickets may also have included an image of the customers' proof of purchase, and thus partial credit card information.

Among Trees is a gorgeous sandbox adventure game coming in 2019
https://www.pcgamer.com/among-trees-is-a-gorgeous-sandbox-adventure-game-coming-in-2019/
I'm not sure I know what Among Trees is, but damn does it look gorgeous. Announced with a short trailer at The Game Awards 2018, Among Trees is a "survival sandbox adventure" set in a vibrantly colored woodland full of critters. The trailer didn't show much, beyond the striking art style, but the Among Trees website provides a bit more detail.

Ordinarily, we wouldn't bother you with console news, but the multiplatform releases are part of a bigger vision, something the team at Phoenix Labs calls "One Dauntless".

Think back to the long forgotten age of this morning when Fortnite Season 7 and the new creative mode went live. The Block will be where the best player-made creations are put on display for everyone, so long as they make the cut.

Black cats get a bad rap, which is why they don’t get adopted as often as other cats, and now we’ve got one leading children into psychedelic gothic dioramas. I’ll try not to hold it against Iris.Fall, however, because gosh does it look lovely.

Just finished watching Obsidian's The Outer Worlds demo gameplay - not a big fan of the setting and art, but from little that has been shown this should turn out quite good.
It's (among others) Tim Cain's game, one of the key people in creating Fallout 1/2, and it kinda shows...which is very, very good thing.

It does look interesting.

Tho this one and Rage 2 remind me a bit of Borderlands :-/.
