Well. It might be possible now as nVidia has pulled a Geforce FX with the 2000 series, that has given AMD some breathing room to catch up possibly.
Th RX 480/580 was still a large chip for the performance level we got though... And Vega 64 was massive.

Vega 64 for example was 486 mm2.
The Geforce 1080 was 314mm2.
***************************
Radeon RX 480 was 232mm2.
Geforce 1060 was 200mm2.

AMD has a big issue in regards to efficiency and die size, they need to rein it all in, because not only were the nVidia chips smaller, they used less power and they were faster.

Well, now that AMD has a proper CPU I'm sure they could scale back the compute side of their GPUs, freeing space to make them smaller or better at games. But that would probably affect their DX12 performance and, with Ray Tracing gaining traction, that side of their GPUs could come in handy for that.

So, what AMD/RTG needs is to drop GCN and develop a new architecture from scratch (or almost). Too bad that's easier said than done.

I think a new GPU architecture is slated after Navi.
AMD tends to stick to an architecture for a long time... I.E Terascale with the Radeon 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000 and 6000 GPU's.
Before that the 9000, x800,x1900 was a relatively short lived architecture.

But GCN will probably stick around a little longer with the 7000, 8000, 200, 300, 400, 500 and probably 600 and 700 series.

Dark Souls' most gruelling mod gets Remastered treatment, adds challenge run features (Updated)
https://www.pcgamer.com/dark-souls-new-game-plus-infinite-mod-might-be-its-most-gruelling-yet/
There are a number of ways to make From Software's notoriously difficult Dark Souls more challenging—but Notaprofi's New Game Plus Infinite mod might be its most torturous yet.
Update: Those of you familiar with Dark Souls lore will know history is doomed to repeat itself in Lordran. But this is taking the piss. Notaprofi's New Game Plus Infinite mod has made its way from Dark Souls' Prepare to Die Edition to its Remastered variation. The new instalment does everything as before, but also brings with it some subtle tweaks designed to improve challenge runs, and to make the mod generally easier to use.

XCOM 2 mod adds 929 voice lines from GTA San Andreas's CJ, is wonderful
https://www.pcgamer.com/xcom-2-mod-adds-929-voice-lines-from-gta-san-andreass-cj-is-wonderful/
Earlier this year, I wrote about an XCOM 2 mod that adds over 1,000 lines from the cult space sitcom Red Dwarf. It's hilarious and I love it. After writing about War of the Chosen's Tactical Legacy DLC earlier today, I had another rummage in the sci-fi strategy's Steam Workshop. I found Carl Johnson. I wasn't disappointed.
Any game that shoehorns GTA: San Andreas' protagonist CJ into its bounds is a winner in my book. Any game that adds 929 voice lines from Grove Street's finest is golden.

In case you weren’t aware of, Odyssey features level-gating missions, meaning that you need to reach a certain level in order to complete both main and side quests. This feature was also present in Origins, however in Odyssey Ubisoft is offering an EXP booster that bypasses this “feature.” Naturally this XP booster is behind a pay-wall and thankfully a trainer can offer the same thing but for free to everyone.

This mod replaces Stardew Valley monsters with Dragon Quest foes
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-mod-replaces-stardew-valley-monsters-with-dragon-quest-foes/
If you've played a Dragon Quest game in the last 32 years, you're probably familiar with the series' enemy blue slimes. These wrathful creatures bounce around with the utmost hateful violence, seeking to mow down all adventurers in their path. Feared and loathed by all, they represent all that is unambiguously evil in video game antagonists. And now you can encounter them in Stardew Valley.
This mod, entitled Dragon Quest Monsters, lets you replace all of Stardew Valley's mine dungeon enemies with their corresponding Dragon Quest enemies. So Stardew Valley slimes turn into the wretched DQ blue slimes, bats turn into Drackies, duggies turn into Muddy Hands, and big slimes turn into the Crownless King slime.

Friday news, part two:

Fallout 76 fans call out perceived Brotherhood of Steel timeline discrepancy
https://www.pcgamer.com/fallout-76-fans-call-out-perceived-brotherhood-of-steel-timeline-discrepancy/
A group of Fallout 76 fans have called out a perceived discrepancy in Fallout 76's timeline, relative to long-serving series faction The Brotherhood of Steel.
As reported by Eurogamer, Reddit user Baffodil voiced concerns about the following in-game note which alludes to the Brotherhood's presence in West Virginia's Appalachia—the setting of the incoming multiplayer shooter RPG. Baffodil, and a number of other prospective players, reckon the BoS's presence in east coast USA in the year 2102 (when 76 takes place) is less than likely.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance Amorous Adventures DLC out next week
https://www.pcgamer.com/kingdom-come-deliverance-amorous-adventures-dlc-out-next-week/
Watch the first trailer for Kingdom Come: Deliverance's next DLC, featuring a loved-up Hans Capon above. And know that the action role-player's Amorous Adventures is due next week.
So, what's going on above? Well, the bold Hans is in love, says publisher Deep Silver, and requires Henry's guidance as he attempts to woo romantic interest Karolina. Things are far from straightforward, though, and a lost family jewel, a magic love potion and "the most romantic poem of all" all promise to thwart Cupid's arrow.

'More than one and less than 12' games based on 2000 AD are in the works
https://www.pcgamer.com/more-than-one-and-less-than-12-games-based-on-2000-ad-are-in-the-works/
If you know anything about British developer/publisher Rebellion, you probably know that they own the comic book anthology 2000 AD, on top of making games like Sniper Elite and Strange Brigade. Back in August, I had the chance to sit down with studio co-founder and CEO Jason Kingsley, where I asked him about the process of licensing out stories from 2000 AD's four decades in print. This began back in February 2017, and I was curious to hear about the results.

Return of the Obra Dinn, from the maker of Papers, Please, comes out next week
https://www.pcgamer.com/return-of-the-obra-dinn-from-the-maker-of-papers-please-comes-out-next-week/
More than four years after it was first revealed to the world, Return of the Obra Dinn, "an insurance adventure with minimal color" being developed by the maker of Papers, Please, will be out next week—October 18.
The subtitle is odd but accurate: The game tells the tale of the merchant ship Obra Dinn, which was declared lost in 1802 but reappeared five years later, drifting, with damaged sails and no crew. You, an insurance investigator for the East India Company, must get aboard the ship, assess the damages, and figure out what went wrong. Its first-person exploration is rendered entirely in 1-bit color—that is, monochrome—with core rendering resolution locked to 800x450.

Fortnite is getting a new vehicle called the Quadcrasher, which looks very much like it sounds: It's a quad equipped with a sort of cow catcher/snowplow blade up front, with an angry (yet oddly cute) face painted on it.

>>And there's also new skins.
