Forums - Gaming - The End is Near: Google building a gaming console

Yay, another DD vendor and another piece of hardware :/
Go away, Google.

so an ouya google edition.... no thanks.

Until Google picks up a notable developer that can sell hardware, I'm not vaguely interested.

Imagine a video game console where all games are either free or very cheap at the cost of advertisements appearing in each loading screen (or a new "advertisement screen" if loading times are reduced).

Give that console proper third party support and you have got yourself a deal.

I introduce you to the... Mahogany Station! :P

Well Google has zip to show as a hardware player, and we've seen MS stumble repeatedly on hardware initiatives as well so I'm not getting overly excited.

It also depends on if this will be a Ouya competitor (which is nice, it'll greatly shrink that already over-bloated market) or a PS4/XB1/WiiU competitor. If the hardware is powerful enough to play with the big boys, I'm sure 3rd parties will have no problem porting over their titles to Android (or Apple) devices. One would assume such a device from Google or Apple would be far more than a game player (if not they've really missed the boat). Should a move would be very interesting to watch. A system that had all the mobile and all the console games (minus system exclusives natch) in one place? Yes please.

Not interested. The only good thing from this is that there will be more competition. What's happened to their Google glasses that they've been talking about for years now?

So, an android console with not a lick of a hint towards any first-party game development or other AAA game exclusivity, from a company that has absolutely zero experience in the video game industry, but with all of the bitter aftertaste of having an NSA box in your living room? I wouldn't even want this if it's for free.

Why can't Google focus on their cars? Or making you not look like a twat while wearing Google glass? Or telling the NSA to sod off?

Cuz thays what everyone wants. An inconvenient way to play your convenient android games.

Same as all other consoles. If DD only or if it has DRM, it will be doomed.

Also, Google doesn't have any first party. How many years did Sony buy game studios before they released the PS1? How many did Microsoft buy, and for how long before XBox?

I LOVE ICELAND!

If they can provide some innovation, I'm all for it. I have my doubts though.
