Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo closing online services for Wii this June

It doesn't sound silly at all. There is no comment about the game servers being shut down. It won't be long before those are next.

Although I am not familiar with the services and these kind of 'side' services probably wouldn't interest me I do think it's rather soon or the wrong time to stop everything besides your store and browser. (right?)
There are 100 million wii's out there and they are still selling 5 million units a year. Now that we've had the Xboxone debacle, this could turn out bad publicity for Nintendo.

It tells buyers Nintendo will not support their consoles for very long, which makes it less attractive to buy the concessor. Certainly when it is already having a hard time.

Or this could be a nonissue for all but the most dedicated of Wii users who have no access to television, smartphones, laptops or who can't stick their head out of a window. If no one bothered to report this, then no one would have even bothered to find out the News, Weather and other cool-once-but-quickly-forgotten channels stopped working.

I haven't used any of these channels in the last few years. As long as the servers for MKWii stay up most people probably won't even notice this.

And you guys wonder why the hardcore won't ever come to Nintendo. The 360 and PS3 will have servers up for years after the Wii. WiiU is definitely the next Gamecube. 25-30m sold max.

Do you know how silly this sounds?

No, basing lifetime sells on a console because the manufacturer is about to discontinue supporting features hardly anyone usees on an older console sounds completely reasonable. Better watch out Pachter, there's a new sherriff in town!

Nintendo will shut down many of its Wii Channels on 28 June, including the Nintendo Channel, News Channel, Forecast Channel, Everybody Votes Channel and Mii Contest Channel and (i believe) wiiconnect24

Additionally, you'll no longer be able to send and receive messages using the Wii Message board. However, the Wii Shop Channel will stay open so you'll still be able to download WiiWare and Virtual Console games.
Ahead of the closure, Nintendo thanked its fans for their support and apologised to those who use the Channels.
"We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company's products. We apologise to those of you currently using these services, and ask for your understanding.

"The above services will no longer be available even if they are started up from the Wii Menu. However, services other than those mentioned above, such as the Wii Shop Channel and 'Today's Accomplishments' on the Wii Message Board, will remain available."

nintendo didn't clarify which games this applies to, or whether online gameplay in popular titles like Mario Kart Wii or Super Smash Bros. Brawl would be affected (Nintendo refused to comment on this matter in response to an Ars request).
but mostly likely they wont be going down. Mario kart DS (which is older than mkwii ) servers are still up so i dont think nintendo will close all online for wii

Dude, where the fuck is the source link? Always put a link to the source.

So online will be taken down OMG
