You can make an argument for all really, but without going for 'technical' victories, I give the honor to Nintendo.

You can make an argument for all really, but without going for 'technical' victories, I give the honor to Nintendo.

I think if you go by sales #'s it's nintendo for now, this generation still has time even if one or all move onto the next generation, but nintendo was the last one in this generation and the first one out. I expect xbox and ps3 games to come out for at least 2 more years and possibly more for ps3. The PS brand has always been in for 10 years per console, there was a Madden 2005 on the PS1 !! The supply may start to dry up by this time next year but I think both consoles have a good 2-3 years left in them.
And I think as a gamer that it's arguably a tossup between the ps3 and 360 in terms of the exclusives and how you like the presentation and online experiences. I prefer the 360 even though I was a PS fanboy the previous two generations. The 360 is just more accessiable to me, I like the way I can interact with my friends, plus I don't think we have the ability to see online downloads but I know with all the DOTW sales on the 360 that they must be killing it in online arcade downloads, I have almost 400 arcade games not even counting DLC for arcade and retail games. That may not get figured in with sales but that's a considerable amount of revenue.
The 360 made a huge leap this generation, the achievement system, the ability to turn on your console from the controller (simple I know but really conveninent) the online experience really made the console have a greater appeal. It's a shame that the xbox is not as popular in Japan as I feel if they were more open to a western console that xbox could have won this generation, it has huge support in the US however but we embrace their consoles and it would be nice to have more support over there.
The PS3 started off this generation with poor mistakes but I'm glad it recovered. I loved the PS1 and PS2, I think the PS1 is the greatest console of all time if you look at any consoles library and don't include backward compatability, just the games that appeared on that console in it's lifespan, the amount of rpg's and franchises, and even the obscure games such as Tomba and Syphon Filter that don't always get mentioned as often as FF, MGS, Crash, Spyro, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider and all the other great games. The ps3 though was and still is the most expensive console so even if there was some loss of the consoles sold, you have to take into account that they sold more in terms of console sales ($), not console numbers.
I look at the wii as having a lot of shovelware. I mean it was bombarded with a lot of crappy mini game intensive games that only appealed to more casual gamers. I think the wii consoles get the least amount of use, a lot of the people I knew that didn't game that had it, got rid of them and only had a handful of games. It was the latest thing and I give nintendo credit for that but I think we see going to the wii u that the casual people had their taste of console gaming and the wii u has to compensate for that. Also looking at the system to software ratio while the wii is winning both, it's not dominating in terms of software over the competition with 20 million less sales each but are close behind, I think that means that gamers on the ps3 and 360 buy more games and are more into their systems. While a lot of the casual buyers bought fewer games and tired out of it, even though the consoles sold more I think they got less use out of them and again I think in terms of the consoles as game machines that wii didn't have the lasting appeal for the more hardcore gaming crowd, there wasn't as much games to pump your time into and the casual players didn't support it the way 99 million 360 or ps3 games would have played their consoles and in terms of games bought. I think that with discounts eventually and being that neither console are backward compatiable that they will close in on the wii in terms of console sales and really close in on the software numbers if they can support their consoles another 2-3 years.
I've been gaming since the original nes and except for the first party stuff, of which there wasn't much and no real new franchises, it was pretty disappointed to gamer like me. There was only 2 LOZ (1 of which was also on the GC and was basically a gc game that got ported) 1 DK game, no star fox or f zero games, a good share of mario games, 1 poor metroid game and the traditional smash and mk games. There was obviously other unique titles but most of the ports were missing gameplay and the arcade titles on the ps3 and xbox were more memorable, I had no need to redownload all nintendo titles.
Wii in first party titles.
I suppose PS3 in overall (FP + TP).
PS3 because will outsell Wii in the next 3 or 4 years
Wii in particular and Nintendo in general won the 7th generation, the only problem was horrible bad 3rd party support that completely destroyed any confidence in 3rd parties on Nitendo console platforms, they not only failed to support the platform properly with new quality software but they even failed to support the platform with ports from older systems, it was great example that they never intended to support Nintendo properly, this partially damaged Wii brand.
In 8th generation Nintendo need to get rid of 3rd party support completely it's useless its bad for their image (brand) and they need to concentrate on high quality exclusive content.
Nintendo more than made up with their GameCube struggles by kicking everyone's collective butt. Wii and DS make for the best console/handheld pair of all time, and I doubt there will ever be such a dynamic duo again.
Microsoft grew their presence exponentially and did an excellent job of keeping the 360 relevant in the marketplace through exclusive deals and Kinect.
Sony is the only loser here, but only in relation to the PS2's success. PS3 scratched and clawed its way into second place, and the PSP actually performed well in terms of hardware sales. A decent first pass at a handheld.
Obviously Nintendo made the most money and that is paramount for any business, but everyone gets a passing grade for what may be the first time in industry history. The 16-bit era almost did, but the Turbo-Grafix 16 exists.

I dunno its still going strong last time I checked,
Wii's winning atm but who knows who will get the last horah.
Xbox 360 elevated everyone's game in the online department, every else had to play catch up
Wii, sold the most hardware software - but should really be considered a market of its own
PS3 is winning overall hardware sales, but is behind Xbox 360 by about 88 million pieces of software.
Xbox Gained huge market share this generation
PS3 lost huge market share this generartion
So
Nintendo
Xbox 360
PS3

So, 360 is above the PS3 despite selling less systems with 1 year more on the market?
