Animal Crossing definitely bigger on handheld, it's a game way better suited to handheld than Zelda. One of the best handheld suited games.
Zelda is one of the main attractions to the home console industry on the other hand. Although the series has declined in stature, but all it will take is one great Zelda to win its image back.
I don't know which is bigger overall.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
| Cheebee said: ... What about Mario Kart and Smash Bros.? Or the Wii_ games like Fit, Sports and Party? Or even the DK games? Compared to those franchises, Zelda is pretty niche, sales-wise. I mean, take Mario Kart; it's the very definition of a system seller. Zelda's a bit like Metroid, albeit to a much lesser extent, in that it's seen as an important franchise for Nintendo, while in reality, it's not that big a big seller at all. |
I was counting Mario Kart in with the Mario IP. If you wanted to seperate them, then Mario Kart is above everything including Pokemon. Animal Crossing Wild World outsold every SSB game and New Leaf will likely do the same. Since SSB4 will have 2 versions and its first HH, it will make things more clear. I'd bet that AC New Leaf, and ACU will outsell SSBU & SSB3D. Wii Series hasn't had enough time to say. First off, its exclusive to their home systems. Also, we have yet to see if the series success will carry over to Wii U. I think it'll be successful but not nearly as big as before. Donkey Kong? AC is definitely past that one.
I think Zelda is still a big seller. It matches sales of Uncharted for the most part. It's just that compared to Nintendo's massive sellers, it looks smaller.

I was talking more overall. I guess we can seperate them though. I'll make a new thread about it :)

Reason being? Just curious to see your opinion.
On consoles, Zelda currently outsells AC by about 2 Million
On HH's AC currently outsells Zelda by about 7 Million
wouldn't that make AC bigger? Unless, you don't look at sales as the main indication.
I agree with you, but I believe that Zelda moves more consoles than Animal Crossing. The reason is that Zelda is a rare commodity (epic adventure), whereas AC is part of a cornucopia of casual offerings on Nintendo systems.

Zelda moves more consoles than Animal Crossing, simple. New Leaf was on market in a perfect time. 3DS is still "new" and the people needed another reason to buy it. So Nintendo came with a new bundle and a f***k awesome launch window for next months. That's it.

Lets just say that Zelda does move a lot more systems than Animal Crossing. (which is debatable) Doesn't Nintendo profit much more from game sales?
Zelda TP + Zelda PH = 11.6 Million
ACWW + ACCF = 16.2 Million
Plus, I'm sure Zelda's budget is much higher than AC's so Nintendo makes much more profit.
I respect your opinion though.
Pokemon is unquestionably bigger than Zelda. Animal Crossing is still rising, it's hard to say what kind of upper limits it has.
I don't even know what Zelda is anymore. I've always said that Zelda is one of the few Nintendo home console properties (before they started making RPGs) that made me want a Nintendo home console, but I'm not so sure of that. Skyward Sword didn't even make me think of wanting a Wii. It feels kind of strange and I feel a bit guilty because of that but that's the way it is. Maybe it's just me, I don't know, but I didn't feel any magic from it.
I think that happened with other people as well, where somewhere in their heart they subconsciously thought, "that's not Zelda," and lost interest. If that's the case, then the Zelda IP might be sinking rather than rising. I'm very interested in seeing what Nintendo does with it next.

It's about even right now, I'd say. I'll have to see how well A Link Between Worlds, Animal Crossing U and Zelda U perform before making any definite statements.
