He went on to say that he thinks initial sales for this generation will be better than last generation for Microsoft and Sony because of limited competition from Nintendo.

Ha, as if anyone who actually plays games went Wii only that gen to begin with.  Everyone had a 360, PS3, or powerful PC to play everything the rest of the industry was playing, as will be the case once again with the Wii U.

This is also an incredibly milquetoast prediction. I expect roughly 35  - 55 million lifetime.

uhh, I only had a Wii last gen aside from my 3DS.

I think it is quite sad that Nintendo, coming off the heels of a console selling 100m units, is now having a console sell comparable to their biggest console failure (minus the VB).

Gamecube was a pitiful console. It had its gems, but because of its colossal failure, Wii was born. Maybe if the Wii U continues to emulate the Gamecube, the Wii U successor will be amazing. Wii U's problem isn't a lack of marketing or a 'misunderstanding' by consumers to fully grasp the awesomeness of assymetric gameplay. People get it, understand it and are rejecting Nintendo's current direction. As a poster once said, The Wii U and its Gamepad is a solution in search of a problem.Which is in total opposition to what the Wii was.

people couldnt care less about that, they're waiting for the games, period.

Even Dreamcast would have sold better than Gamecube if left on the market more than 2 years.

No. Nintendo's first party were far stronger than Sega's.

It didn't really matter, it sold quite a bit faster in all 3 regions aligned for official life, and price advantage would've been a serious problem for the Gamecube the entire gen.

i didn't say that. i SAID THE WII WAS A BIG SUCCES. Read pls. The nes sold 62 million. Thats good but not great. Only the wii was a great succes. So yes, only in the handhelds were GREAT.

BTW how do you reply directly to a comment?

NES did great, u have to take into account how much smaller the market was then. NES had about 85% marketshare, PS2 is the only other console that has been able to dominate like that.

Dreamcast wouldn't have lasted the distance though. The 6th gen market left so little room for competition already, there was no room for Dreamcast to stick around and do better-than-Gamecube numbers.

How much of a disappointment would it be if it outsold the N64 at around 34 million? I think it will..... it will probably pass the SNES as well, but it won't reach NES and especially not Wii numbers,

We will see.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Yeah exactly. The Wii U has managed to undersell the Gamecube every month despite the other next-gen consoles not even being out yet.

And if the third parties don't have the option to skip a platform someone should tell them that. Right now they seem very comfortable with it.

@bold. It doesn't matter. Things rebounded for the 3DS, the can and will for the U.

Regarding 3rd parties, they don't matter on Nintendo consoles until much later, once Nintendo established a base for them.

They can yes, but you can't really say they will right now. There isn't enough to go on, and the only information we have goes against the Wii U.

the only information we have is that wii u is not selling because it doesn't have big system seller games and that those are coming starting in the next few months.

Getting wrong things right I think Nintendo will be able to sell at least 50M of them. Anyway, the horribly clumsy way Ninty managed the last years of Wii before Wii U's launch will still affect it, making it sell lifetime less than it could have.
