Forums - Gaming - Xbox vs GC .. Which had best looking games? Would love an outside perspective

GC or Xbox had best graphics?

Xbox 123 40.46%

GC 120 39.47%

About the same imo 34 11.18%

Meh ..... PC 15 4.93%

I couldn't tell really 11 3.62%

Total:303

Xbox could run Half-Life 2 and FarCry . Not to mention Kotor and Morrowind.

Gamecube and PS2 couldn't even think about,

I just had a conversation with some friends, and they're divided on which one had superior graphics. I owned all systems last gen, but I only had a few games on the Xbox - Ninja Gaiden, NG Black, all Halos, Blinx, and about 5 others. On the other hand, I had a plethora of NGC titles. To me, they were nothing short of amazing and I often thought the GC had the best graphics because of those games. Some of those games include RE0, RE1, RE4, Star Fox Adventures and a few other noteworthy titles. With that said, since I only saw a small number of XB games I don't think I would be an objective judge.

What do you guys think? Despite what was on paper, which system had the games with the best visuals? Or in another way, which had the best looking exclusives? We already know the PS2 is out of this race. But if people want to argue this, then by all mean ... go ahead.

Shadow of the Colossus and GOW2 could rival most GC and Xbox exclusives.

But multi platforms did suffer on PS2 in comparison to GC and specially Xbox.

Anyone voting for GC is either too young to judge, or a fanboy. I am 33, and owned all four consoles that gen. The GC had some games that rivaled it like Rouge Squadron, but over all, the Xbox blew it away. Games like Splinter Cell more than prove that to be true.

Both made the PS2 look like crap though, graphically speaking.

@bold: Oh please. There are these things called, you know, OPINIONS... and just because someone doesn't share yours doesn't automatically make them naive or a fanboy.

About the same for me.

I would say Twilight Princess and Ninja Gaiden were the games for both systems that stunned me could be done on that level of hardware.

Both can do things the other can't.

GC couldn't do the extensive per-pixel lighting and normal mapping of games like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Chronicles of Riddick.

Xbox couldn't do the amount of polygons and effects that Rogue Squadron 2 and 3 pushed while running at 60fps.

It all depends on which approach looks more visually appealing to the individual.

Xbox was better of the two.

GC was very efficient tho and put out some pretty graphics.

Xbox was severely bottlenecked by its RAM. While it was more powerful on paper, the real-world difference wasn't that significant. GC games normally pushed more polygons and higher res textures, but Xbox games had shaders(which heavily impacted polygon performance and texture resolution).

The fact that the Resident Evil games on the GameCube could compete with some 7th gen titles speaks volumes. I was always under the impression that the Xbox had the power to top it, I just don't recall anything beating the Cube's best efforts.

RE4 was one of the best looking games, but it could have been ported to the Xbox. It was on the PS2 and the biggest sacrifice was the lighting effects.

I don't think you could bring games like Riddick, Chaos Theory, Doom 3, or Half-Life 2 to Gamecube without big sacrifices.

I feel Half-Life 2 on Xbox was more visually stunning than RE4 on Gamecube. Primarly because of the large detailed environemtns, physics, and superior lighting.

It also sacrififed a lot of textures and polygons.  In some sections, it's really bad.  Even the cutscenes were just video of the GC builds in-game rendered cutscenes.

As for the debate, both were able to top each other in different aspects.  Neither "easily" overpowered the other.  Claiming so is beyond the scope of objectivity.

What it really came down was that the Xbox was easier to work with thanks to DirectX yet the GC's TEV shader system was almost equally as capable for those developers that took the time to learn it.   You really can't answer this question definitively because of the trade offs each console had over the other and the subjectiveness inherent with the question to begin with.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Silent Hill 3, MGS3, FFXII, GT4 and GoW2 shows that PS2 was not too far from GC and Xbox.

Played booth games many times, I consider Silent Hill 3 on PS2 prettier than RE remake on Cube.

GC games had better art direction and trickery. Xbox games had more advanced shader techniques however they were pretty limited in capability. Metroid Prime is still the best looking game of that whole generation. It ran at a smooth as silk 60fps @ 480p and had awesome lighting, reflections, ragdoll physics and more stuff than I can remember. It singlehandedly got me off the PC and back into console gaming. Games on the PC ran at higher resolutions, but none could compare to the overall Metroid Prime experience. It was 10 years ago but I'll never forget it.
