As others have said, it's just for the flashlight. But I wouldn't worry too much, because most of the game is set in the open or in well-lit rooms. It's that first chapter in the QZ which is the darkest thus far.

You do need to shake the controller to make the flash light work proper
Ok just a quick update.
1. I use a third party controller because my DS died and I found a third party 360 controller for the PS3 :P Blasphemy I know....
2. After playing a little while yes the flashlight is not necessary for most of the game.. I was just a bit jittery when I first started playing it haha. And it does recharge over time.
3. I did not know that you could hold triangle to pick everything up... I like the guy in the video that was posted... Nice!
