Kotaku: Should people expect returning characters, should they expect most of their favorites from Brawl to come back?

Sakurai: The reality of the situation unfortunately is that there are certain limitations on the 3DS, so we're forced into a situation where we may need to reduce some characters to a certain degree, but we're really working hard to include as many characters as possible.

Though I have no interest in Smash Bros, I hate how Nintendo's current dick-sucking of the 3DS is holding back Wii U.

Are you talking about 1st party support or just how the games on the Wii U are?  Because if you are talking about the games themselves then it's not even true.  The 3DS versions of Wii U titles tend to be different.   If you're talking about the 1st party support for Wii U, I guess it's a matter of how you look at it.

Wii U looks better. Cleaner and with better texture and lighting.

The 3DS version I think is going to hold the Wii U version back, both because of resources (they have to make 2 games) and because 3DS limitations will hold back content in the Wii U version.... that being said, the game looks better then Brawl in motion and I'm sure it will look even better come release time.

The only one that somewhat makes sense is the resources one, but even then you're not realizing how much bigger the team is this time around.

I also think there's a lack of understanding on your part, considering you think that both games are going to be the same.  They aren't.  They will be different.  The character roster may be the same, the moves may still be the same... but that makes up almost none of the actual game itself.  They can still put much more into the Wii U version without having to worry about leaving stuff out of the 3DS version because that was already to be expected.  They aren't SUPPOSED to be the exact same game.

So no, I don't think there really is much holding back at all.  Only the time constraints and budget are really holding things back.

The only "Holding back" that seems to be here is the character roster.  However, if you recall from earlier, Sakurai didn't want to make the game all about just adding characters to the roster anyways.  He thinks that having too many characters is also bad thing.  So generally I think Sakurai's being held back only on the front where the characters and their moves have to be same for both, so he would have to work with the 3DS first then Wii U on that one.  Nearly everything else will be different.

That quote of having too many characters to balance was before he had help of Namco, he specifically says here that he is trying to "include as many characters as possible."

There is another interview where he mentions having trouble with duel-characters such as the ice climbers on the 3DS version, and that will effect the Wii U version as he wants the characters and moves to be the same for connectivity reasons.

The difference will be very obvious once played on even a smaller HDTV.

I think people need to realize there is a difference in art direction between the two games as well, Smash U is a more colorful and slightly cartoony game, so things like the details on Mario's over all was a design choice. Also, Bowser looks amazing compared to how he looked in Brawl.

Also thought this might be appropriate.

Not a crazy jump, but you can tell it is def. next gen. This also shows us how much effort they put in the last one.

Compared to how little it seems they're putting into this one graphically. Brawl looked very good for a Wii game, while Smash U looks mediocre for a Wii U game.

Huh, Brawl really was a good looking game. I remember thinking that when I first played it, too, but I guess I've gotten used to it since then. I was a little surprised at how well it held up to the new one in those comparison shots. That said, the new one does look great!
... Does anyone else find those pictures of Kirby a little frightening though?

Hmm

I wouldn't say that at all.
