Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One’s DRM Explained

WHAT IT IS

  • Your Xbox One must connect to the Internet once every 24 hours for you to play it.
  • The connection is required to transfer a few kilobytes of data.
  • If you don’t connect, you will not be able to play your games. You will still be able to use the X1 as a DVD and BluRay player, and the Live TV features will continue to work.

WHY IT’S THERE

  • You don’t need the disc for X1 games.
  • Shared library.

I started summarizing thinking it has good new information. When I finished the second part I saw "Conclusion"! Stupid article.
Since I summarized it I'm going to post it.

As I have said before, I don't understand the point of the discs if they are basically "not needed."

If you want digital only that is fine ... it's not my thing but have at it. What advantage does a disc offer asided from wasted gas money driving to a retail store?

Getting the game without having to download it.

I admit, it's a fascinating idea for a console. It's just a few years too early.

Next gen games may be like 10-20 GB in size if not more... Some people with internet caps may have issues with this hence they can get the disk to bypass the downloading part. Disk is just a distribution method.

Its also there to make sure retailers don't stup selling the Xbox One. They want a cut of game sales too...

I can see your point, but doesn't the Xbox One let you play games as you download them, or is that just the ps4? So it really doesn't matter how long a download takes especially if the console allows you to download stuff in a low power mode or something so it can keep downloading uninterrupted from start to finish.

I don't know what the average caps are for Internet data usage, but unless you are downloading like 5-10 games a month I don't see that being too much of an issue.

The retail part makes sense for retailers, but I don't see how the consumer benefits.

What disolitude has said. He hit the nail on the head. Can you imagine the backlash from retailers for not getting a cut of XB1 sales? Also, since games are so large in size this reduces to wait time vs downloading a game. For example, It took me 2 hours just to download Dead Space 1 on Games on Demand and that was around 7 gigs. It would take me 6+ hours just to download a next gen title if they are indeed 20+ gigs, and this is with high end tier DSL speeds.

It's to ease the next generation (or the one after) into digital gaming, and a great idea by MS.

I just wish MS showed the sharing featuring at E3, it would reduce a lot of hate.

It's just that simple.

Yeah they said Xbox one can play while you download. Average internet cap for people using the big internet providers in Canada is 100 GB per month. If you download 2-3 games you may be pushing 30-40 GB already. Add netflix, youtube and other stuff and you got trouble...

I think Microsoft is trying to balance consumers and corporations here. You can't have a consumer focused device and ignore the likes of Gamestop and Walmart. You will get your ass handed to you at retail. In 10 years the likes of Gamestop will have major issues selling games much like Blockbuster had trouble renting games and movies few years ago, but this has to be done gradually.

I don't think Microsoft will shed a single tear to cut Gamestop out of the loop in 10 years with the Xbox One 2 :)

That's missing info. But I don't want to talk about it anymore so meh.

MS would be on game stop shit list... and walmart.. oh wait maybe not so much... since it is only a small part of their sale....
anyways... yeah i was expecting that the explanation is more like "you can still play games without net connection in days" guess not....
xbox one have a lot of games.... and gamers wouldnt resist buying xb1 in the future...
