I'm fine with all these sequels, i have never complained. Nintendos sequels often has far more creativity than any other "new" ip.
He's right.
It is quite possible to take risks with existing IPs, just as it's possible to play it safe with new IPs. Why else do you think that so many new IPs can so often look like other existing IPs? And how about franchises like Kid Icarus, Kirby, and Metroid that can do brand new things with existing IPs?
He is completely and utterly right. That said, I do think Nintendo is playing it safer this year then they have in the recent past, but even then they're still publishing two new games from Platinum Games. They've got "X" coming, which at worst is a sequel to Xenoblade, which didn't exactly sell all that well to begin with. Fire Emblem Awakening was a big risk to localize: the game could have not only been the last Fire Emblem to be localized, but the last Fire Emblem period, had it not sold as well as it did.
New IPs are, frankly, overrated. They can allow for new settings, yes, but they don't automatically make a better game, or even necessarily a riskier game.
Hell, just look at FUSE: what was an interesting looking shooter was turned into a generic "me too" game by focus groups. That was not a game that took a lot of risks, regardless of the fact that it doesn't have a number next to the name.
I think the problem is not that we are getting games in IP's that we get frequently, but that these new iterations are playing it much safer than usual.
SM3DW looks like a carbon copy of 3D land, I'm not used to such an uninspired entry in the mario series.
DKTF looks like it could be a level pack for returns.
Mario Kart 8 looks great, but we did just get a mario kart not too long ago.
If the new 3D mario was something new and unique, and if DKTF looked like it was made on Wii U, then no one would be complaining.

And this is why as the portable and home console strategies at Nintendo continue to merge, it will be more and more crucial for Nintendo to merge the hardware and software library into 1, so as to avoid this phenomenon, and focus their efforts, even possibly leading to new IPs and some risky ventures with the leeway that merger offers.

Here a little quote I want for those to keep memorize in your head for this coming next gen. By: Suke |
Just because something is treated as a new IP (AKA new names, different looking characters, etc) doesn't mean it actually makes much of a difference between other IP's. This is how I view many zombies games that people always describe as "Oh! That's new and different!"
Well, no it's not.

That's different. Because there are always new guns added!
Nintendo has made just under 10 new IPs for the 3DS & under 5 new IPs for the Wii U. I will even name some:
Yarn Yoshi
Dillon's Rolling Western
Sakura Samurai: Art if the Sword
Steel Diver
Savvy Style: Trendsetters
Ketzal's Corridors
Kersploosh!
Pushmo
HarmoKnight
I know there are other new 1st party IPs, but right now that's all I can think of.
And here are some new 2nd party IPs:
Lego City Undercover
The Wonderful 101
And here are some new 3rd party IPs:
ZombiU
Rhythm Thief (the first one is: Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure)
