Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: All These Sequels Don't Mean We're 'Playing It Safe'

I agree with Miyamoto, but also Miyamoto you need to understand that a new IP has a value that a new game with the same IP doesn't present.

Sorry brah.

The difference between Nintendo and most other publishers is that when a developer approaches Nintendo with a new gameplay concept, they add the characters and universe of an existing IP to the game so the dev doesn't have to worry about creating those things. Oven the GCN and Wii gens, they have pushed out several "new" IPs that have Mario/Zelda/Other familiar characters. The PS3/360 crowd, for some stupid reason, lumps ANYTHING with Mario's face on it in the same category as the original Super Mario Bros. That gets so frustrating.

The bad thing about it is that you don't see as many new faces/universes as Sony and other publishers, but that doesn't mean that they aren't innovating with games.

Just as a reference, here is a list of "New IPs"  that have old characters. (And many of them are somewhat recent)

Mario vs Donkey Kong

Mario Kart

Mario Baseball

Mario Strikers

Mario Golf

Mario Party

Mario and Sonic at the ____ Olympic Games

Paper Mario

Mario and Luigi

Luigi's Mansion

Metroid Prime

Donkey Konga

Star Fox Adventures

Kirby's Epic Yarn

Excite Truck/ExciteBots

WarioWare

Wario Land

Metroid Other M

Battalion Wars

Kid Icarus Uprising

the countless Pokemon spinoffs (Pokemon Dash, PokePark, Pokemon Rumble, etc.)

+ more that I'm missing

Anyway, all of these games could be standalone IPs id they didn't have Mario/Samus/Fox/Kirby in them. People who say Nintendo is unoriginal, and releases the same games just because the games have the same characters don't see the uniqueness in titles like all of these. They innovate just as much as Sony and MS.

I agree with him. Sony is known for taking other peoples IP's changing a few things and calling it a new experience. See PS all Stars, Uncharted, LBP, Modnation, or any other IP they have come up with last gen, its all just copies of what some other company did first.
The same people crying over 3 similar Marios between ds,Wii and Wii U are foaming at the mouth for part 5 or 6 of series on their console of choice so their argument usually ends up not being valid in the end.
When Nintendo does make a new IP it is ignored by the people asking for it. I can think of 5 from last gen but if I named then, the excuses would begin.

How does LittleBigPlanet copy off of anything?

They release all those innovative games last gen with great characters model (wii sport, fit, play, music), give them a break, they haven't release a mario game in days

I'm quite aware.

My point still stands. A new IP, a new world, represents a value which a new game, with all its new mechanics and new worlds within an existing franchise, simply cannot offer.

I heard a rumour that Miyamoto's secret new IP is a platformer starring a builder, set in the onion kingdom.

It'll be revolutionary.

As well as every other IP Sony came up with last gen.  So here you go Lister I want what game was copied for this list:

Puppeteer
Rain
Infamous
Tokyo Jungle
and as the above quite list: LBP

Go for it, I'm curious.

...

If Nintendo keeps it`s franchises fresh, i have no problem in having no new IPs.

Gamers have always demanded new IPs, but they keep supporting sequels more than new IPs. Not to mention the desire for change - that can`t be any kind of change.
It`s hard to please us gamers.

We need new IP's we need new IP's We need new IP's we need new IP's

and when they finally get it

Buuuh were is Zelda ,Mario Metroid or Donkey Kong??

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Opinion: Never settle for a remake. No matter how good a game "was," or how powerful the nostalgia goggles were, you have learned things since then, hardware has improved, and you can make the original better.

So, yes, Nintendo is playing things safe. They're changing up gameplay and controls, and not actually toying with the fundamentals of the IP. Last time they took a chance--Other M--it didn't work so good. I wish they would be a bit more assertive with their IP, but they do "enough." The Wii U hardware alone was a bigger risk than any other console of this or last generation, and you don't survive in this market by doing two risky things back to back.

Why would anybody want to change the core of a multi-million dollar selling IP? No publisher would change it if it's a hit.

There is even better...

Fans: Nintendo needs 3D Mario. A new one who goes beyond the Galaxy series. A fresh look at Mario to sell Wii U to the masses.

**Nintendo makes the first 3D Mario multiplayer game (ever i believe)**

Fans: Cats?? People don't like cats! Why couldn't they just make a second sequel to Galaxy?
