The difference between Nintendo and most other publishers is that when a developer approaches Nintendo with a new gameplay concept, they add the characters and universe of an existing IP to the game so the dev doesn't have to worry about creating those things. Oven the GCN and Wii gens, they have pushed out several "new" IPs that have Mario/Zelda/Other familiar characters. The PS3/360 crowd, for some stupid reason, lumps ANYTHING with Mario's face on it in the same category as the original Super Mario Bros. That gets so frustrating.

The bad thing about it is that you don't see as many new faces/universes as Sony and other publishers, but that doesn't mean that they aren't innovating with games.

 

Just as a reference, here is a list of "New IPs"  that have old characters. (And many of them are somewhat recent)

Anyway, all of these games could be standalone IPs id they didn't have Mario/Samus/Fox/Kirby in them. People who say Nintendo is unoriginal, and releases the same games just because the games have the same characters don't see the uniqueness in titles like all of these. They innovate just as much as Sony and MS.

I'm quite aware.

My point still stands. A new IP, a new world, represents a value which a new game, with all its new mechanics and new worlds within an existing franchise, simply cannot offer.
