Thing is my monitor doesn't have built in speakers so I connect RCA cables to this deck i have.

I bought this cable before consulting here: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/For-Xbox-360-PS3-5-Ft-HDMI-to-3-RCA-VGA-15-Pin-Converter-Cable-5Feet-1080p-Gold-/380546671966?pt=US_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item589a59655e

Claims it works for PS3. I need those RCA cables for sound.

Will this solution work? I checked and my monitor is HDCP compliant if that means anything.

Most monitors have a headphone jack, even the early cheap TN panels.
DVI can carry sound too, so if you have a headphone jack, just output the sound from there using a cable like this:

If you can try to avoid VGA, it's got allot of noise being an old analogue source.

I have three monitors hooked up on this computer and I don't believe a single one has a headphone jack.

Maybe OP's does, but was just pointing out that before you spend money on getting video to your monitor, make sure you have a way of getting sound to your headphones or speakers

For my PS3 setup I have video output thru the HDMI cable, and audio output thru the optical port to the stereo. Besides this or just streaming the sound through HDMI, you could also use the default analog cables (red&white) instead to separately output sound from HDMI, although that will not be surround sound.

The settings menu allows you to set what outputs from what jacks, and you can use more than one jack simultaneously. Just get an HDMI to DVI adapter for your video. Since it's digital there's no loss in quality.

ohh i didnt know that. so i can do hdmi to dvi-d then use optical port for sound. What cable do you have for optical out to regular stereo? Because the optical out is digital.

By stereo I meant sound system. It needs to support optical obviously. It's light so it can't simply be converted...

If whatever sound system you're using doesn't have the optical plug, your only options is to run the sound thru HDMI or thru the analog plugs.

Wrong, this will do it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2970SH5157
Obviously you still need the optical cable.

I said it wasn't simple. Of course it can be done (and will also introduce significant quality degradation).

And why would you convert the optical signal to stereo audio when the regular AV output cable already does that? The whole point of using the optical cable is for surround sound. A totally pointless conversion!

I always used to connect my 360 to my (old) monitor and it worked flawlessly.
I tried the same with my PS3 and it did NOT work , because the PS3 needs a monitor that supports HDCP.

Make sure you have one of them or it will never work. I bought a new one a few weeks after I got my PS3 and it worked just fine with a HDMI to DVI cable.

A fried of mine ended up buying a whole new monitor after buying a PS3 because he could not get any adapters or DVI-HDMI cables to work.

Oh saw this too late.
Yeah same here.

Hmm. Wasn't aware of that. Whenever I've plugged my Xbox 360 or PS3 into any monitor even with adapters it's worked fine, they all probably supported HDCP though.

Blasted DRM!
