for those who are saying joel was selfish, the question is, would you let some people kill a person you love for "the greater good"? no, if its somebody you truly love you wouldnt, it isnt the humane thing to do, its the human thing to do. the ending was perfect IMO

Well he didn't even give her the choice. He made the choice for her and lied because she makes him happy.

That can be perceived as selfish.

well he did lie to her at the end to and carried the burdon, he does realize what her life means, its a cure. but they didnt even give her a choice, they were going to kill her even if she didnt want to. wouldnt you have done the same?

Well if she wanted to sacrifice her self in hopes of finding a cure that's wiping out humanity. I guess you let her make that choice.

My guess is she would have sacrificed herself. So Joel took it in his own hands to make sure that didn't happen.

It was selfish but that's what makes the ending so good.

Once again I would never ever bestow such a decision on my daughter.

If she says no -> That would make her feel like she's dooming humanity and she will feel responsible for the rest of her life.

She already kinda knows this, hence why she says at the end =>
"First it was Riley, then Tess, then Sam...".

Then Joel goes like
"Its not your fault and you always find something to believe in, now I know thats not what you want to hear right now.."

And shes like
"Swear to me".

So in a way, I feel her sub contious (spelling check?) is aware of the lie and wants to see if Joel is really going all the way. But another part of her chooses to believe Joel in order to cope with it all. Joel swears in order to remove any guilt she will ever feel. That is the sign of a true caring person. And that is exactly what I would do to someone I truly love even though it might and probably would eat away at me for years to come.

EDIT:
Fuck man this ending is really something <33333

Joel probably can't be considered a humane character. Atleast you're lead to believe he killed innocent people for his survival.

Everyone kills for their survival. Thats "normal" nowadays.

Just like how in the old ages, marrying off a teen girl to an older man was seen as normal. Which is also why what David feels for Ellie can be seen through more than one way (even though he goes full rapist later on kinda XD). And the cannibalism is needed for survival. Times are different.

As for killing innocent people, weren't most trying to kill him too?

Also if I was a father: There's no way in hell I'd let my daughter decide if she wants to live or die LOL

No, not everyone was killing innocent people for their survival. Tommy's group wasn't. I don't believe the fireflies were either.

David's group weren't cannibals for survival. They were just crazy.

Joel made it clear he killed innocent people. Yet people like Tommy get by without killing innocent people. The grow crops, livestock, and what not.

the ending was really great true

im not trying to argue or anything just putting in my point of view. the thing is, she wasnt given a choice, they were already starting surgery, i think of ellie told joel that she wants to do this then that might have been a different outcome, but she didnt even get the chance to think about it.

I'm iffy about the ending. I think Joel and Ellie knew she might have to sacrifice herself. Why else would Joel ask to turn back?

Did the Fireflies drug Ellie and plan to kill her without her knowing? It certainly seems that way. However, Ellie seemed confused at the end. Like maybe she knew she had to sacrifice herself and Joel prevented it.

The only thing we know for sure is... Joel made the decision that made him happy and it may not have been the choice Ellie wanted. That is why he lied.

No, Joel sweared because he doesn't want her to sacrifice herself. So he made up a story of how they weren't look for a cure anymore.

Also, he probably didn't he did a killing spree on the Fireflies. Lets not forget, he killed Marlene. The person Ellie knew all her life.

Exactly. He killed the fireflies and Marlene in order to make sure Ellie never has to go through that kind of a decision.

Your intepretation differs from mine and that's whats so great because I dont agree with it :D

currently doing survival+, I must say survival is how Last of Us should be played no "listening mode" makes everything tense

Just finished it and I'm devastated that the game ended.....I didn't want it to ever end! but there will be a Last of us 2 for sure.

Check out my Youtube channel : http://www.youtube.com/user/ThePSXcollector

After having a few days to reflect on the ending, if I was in Joels position I would do the same thing..

He didn't necessarily kill all the fireflies... but my Joel definitely did, they gave me an assault rifle and extra ammo for El Diablo, then how did they expect me to stealth

He very definitely killed Marlene though, that was cold hearted.

Saw all cutscenes in one youtube video :P

Got pissed off at story direction at end........you take a mission to deliver the girl to the Fireflies, you KNOW shes immune, what do you think they are gonna do to her once they have her??? His ignorance was annoying.

Yet he grows a conscience and acts all disbelieving when they say she has to die to get the vaccine. He literally gives up the cure for humanity to cling to a new daughter figure. The way he also mercilessly/unecessarily killed the firefly leader bugged me.

I did like the end where he totally lies to her to keep their bond in tact

Selfish, wasn't it? I did like the ending though.

Selfish, but mostly ignorant for not piecing together why Firefly doctors would want to have a immune human........

you missing too much information you would have if you had played the game. just seeing how he explains a hydro electric power plant to Ellie, would have made you realize that the man is no scientist.

but it is interesting how you call him ignorant for not piecing things together. maybe he just didn't have all the information... :-p

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
