Forums - Gaming - Why is buying used games such a big deal nowadays?

Used games are only an issue to Microsoft, the decision to block used games will definitely hurt the XBox One. Even my brother, who has an XBox is going to get a PS4 instead because of this policy. The thing is, he doesn't even buy used games. I think he just doesn't want to support them if they're going to prevent you from doing what you wish with something you spent money on.

He doesn't follow gaming, yet he knows about it and plans to go with Sony, that right there tells you something.

If you can't afford new games, find another hobby. In 10 years everything will be digital and the used game problem will be gone.

That might make games cheaper.....LOL

From what some of my friends tell me, Microsoft is trying to immitate Steam, and steam sells brand new games for dirt cheap. Old ones too, I remember when I bough Fallout NV Ultimate Edition for $30 on 360 (new), it was $5 on a Steam summer sale.

The problem is, Microsoft is immitating Steam poorly, and until they prove that they can mimic Steam on price, and make "summer sales" of their own, the One will have a lot of problems.

Probably because publishers are barely making a profit, or even not making a profit at all.

Last I checked EA, Activision, and Microsoft were doing anything but struggling. Like I said Square Enix wouldn't have existed if Final Fantasy didn't do exceptionatly well, it was just as hard to be big back then as it is now.

How can you say publishers are struggling now, but not before, when we had rental game services, and a smaller market?

Many, many game companies have gone out of business. Here's a list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Defunct_video_game_companies

Not all of the companies on that list went out of business for financial reasons, but many of them did.

Also, the cost of a game 20-30 years ago was more, in both real and inflation adjusted terms, that it is now.  I remember paying $70 for SNES games.  That's like $110 in today's dollars.

Just because they wen't out of business, doesn't mean used games killed them off.
You forget that essentially the entire developed world went into recession, who knows what the sales might have been otherwise!

Actually you do! You "own" the hardware, not license it.
You are free to jail-break it so that the system is able to do other things, like have Windows installed to play PC games much akin to what some people did with the origional Xbox, plenty of legal precedents have been set over that so it's not illegal or immoral.

That's the whole fucking point.

No, that's not your point. Your point was that Microsoft is denying our right to sell, trade, or lend used games. I have shown you why that is false. You still have those rights.

You just cannot play them after doing that but this is NOT your right. You do not have a right to what Microsoft's product is able to do. They could make it incompatible with whatever they want.

Fine, you can jailbreak your system. But I thought it was fairly obvious that people were discussing the console's capability immediately after the purchase. None of us has a right to say what the console should or shouldn't be capable of when we first buy it.

Has anyone ever stopped to consider that competition among developers has swelled to an INTENSE level? Think about how many different choices you have in any given genre (shooters especially)... of course it is becoming harder to make money in the industry because competition is fierce.

For all of those condemning used games... have you purchased every shooter made this generation, new? If not, shame on you for not supporting the industry. I can browse a gamestop, and half the titles I didn't even know EXISTED. But yeah, used games are the problem.

Its as if all these studios think it should be EASY to make money hand over fist. It's not. Not going to be.  Video gaming isn't your dirty little secret any more, or just for kids, but rather, a multi billion dollar industry that EVERYONE is trying to get a piece of.  Eliminating used games completely is not going to eliminate competition. In fact, people might start buying LESS new games and start dumping money into other forms of entertainment. Cell phone games. Movies. TV shows. Something outdoors **GASP.

If these studios want to make more money, they will have to be SMART with budgets etc.  And its not going to be easy.  Competition makes everything harder when you are tying to make a sale...

How many of those have gone debunk recently? Do you know if statistically more companies are going bust now then before? I can tell you that a lot of the bankrupt game companies on that list went bankrupt in the 1980's. Remember the big gaming crash of 83?

Also where the heck did you pay $70 for SNES games? SNES games were $40/$50 brand new, N64 games were $50 for the most part too. Nowadays a brand new game day 1 costs $60, and can have anything from $30-$80 of DLC.

$50 in 1996 is about $75 in todays currency, so you're right games are cheaper now, but not as much as you make it seem and when you factor in DLC, they really aren't.

Maybe it was NES.  I thought it was SNES, or both.  This was in Canada.  I used 1990 as the reference date to calculate inflation.

It's possible that they used tiered pricing and charged more for AAA titles, but I definitely saw games for $70.

As for stats around how many have went out of business recently - I don't have that information.  However, I have reviewed the financial statements of many video games companies, and many of them have lost money in recent years, even the big shops have had money-losing quarters.

The entire video game value chain is flawed right now.

I definatly did not see SNES games sell for $60, and I have most of the expensive ones. Chrono Trigger was $50, Earthbound was $50, Tetris was $40....No games on a Nintendo console sold for over $50 until the Wii U, it marked a first for $60 games. The only time a game cost above $50 prior to now on a Nintendo console was if it came with a peripheral like a Super Scope or Wii Fit Board.

The number of debunk studios now, is much less then that in the 80's. You know what happened in the 80's? Games were cheap to produce, so we saw a lot of companies make utter crap, and the consumer just stopped playing. Competition is what makes games better, and there a lot more studios now then ever before, so we need to weed some out. It's sad that major studios like THQ have gone bust, but just like 3DO we will forget about them.

Plus it's not the smaller studios which compain about the used game market, it's mostly EA and Microsoft, and they are on top. EA is just plain greedy with online passes and exclusive rights to NFL, Porsche, etc. If you don't put the pressure on them after they keep making crappy games, then they'll just build a monopoly, and that will drive more studios out of buisness.

Yes, we kinda do. Called the Freedom of Speech. Microsoft can design a system which makes it difficult to trade games, which will still be playable on a different console/account, but you can do whatever you want to that console to make it play whatever games it's physically capable of playing.

For the same logic, it's not illegal to make your PC play 360/Wii/PS3 games. It's your computer, and as long as the game doesn't violate copyright protection, and you don't sell your 360/Wii/PS3 playing PC, then you're fine.

I do hope One gets pirated fast, that would be funny.
