I predict 3D World will land beteen 4m and 5m lifetime sales. For comparison, the current lowest, Mario Sunshine, sold 6.3m, Mario Galaxy is approaching 11m, Galaxy 2 is at 7m, and Mario 64 sold 11.9m.

i'd guess it depends on how wiiU does.  to hit 6.3M wiiU realistically needs to sell at least 12.6M units.  sad to say but at the current sales velocity that's not a guarentee.  If wiiU gets above game cube levels (~22M) i'm confidence 3D world will beat sunshine by the end of the gen.

I played it and had fun and when ever I get around to getting a Wii U I will get it as well. If you enjoy platformers like I do you are not spoiled for choice these days. Mario and Sonic seem to be only reliable for me so I buy every new entry.

My guess on sales would be 8-10 million, largely dependent on how well Wii U does.

You're doing it wrong.  You're not supposed to actually PLAY the game.  You're supposed to judge it based on a minute of footage.  (I played it too.  Really really fun.  Definitely more ambitious than 3D Land which was also awesome.)

I want to play Bowser in a cat suit.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

I only played it with three other people, so can not speak to single player experience.  Level design and controls were great so could see myself enjoying it for hours.  I should note I loved both the 3DS Mario entries (NSMB2 and SM3DL) so I confess I just tend to enjoy these type of games.

The coop is pretty much the reason I enjoyed it.  I love single player Mairo, but coop makes it way more frantic and chaotic, which is a good thing.  Since it's 3D, there is a little less of the messiness of NSMBWii/U.

lol no, why?, it will sell 8m easy

It's the resemblence to the early levels to 3D Land that makes it a good chance the rest will play out the same way.

This approach isn't a risk, it's the same approach as NSMB, NSMBW, NSMBU, and 3D Land; 4 of the last 6 Mario platformers. A risk would have been something NEW.

In that case the problem is more that you simply don't like the approach of Super Mario 3D Land at all. You are basically saying that such a game doesn't require effort and cannot be creative.

I don't agree on the risk issue, especially because you are contradicting yourself. You said that a risk would be something new, but SM3DL was something new. Yet you did put it into the same category as NSMBW, NSMB2 (which you meant) and NSMBU. This leads me to believe that the real issue here is that Nintendo didn't show Super Mario Galaxy 3. I don't see much coherence in the arguments that have been presented by you and others in this thread, but "SM3DW isn't SMG3, so I want this game to fail" ties things together perfectly.

3D Land is great by handheld standards, but that doesn't cut it as console 3D Mario material.

3D Land was new in 2011, the same approach in 2013 on a home console is no longer new. I lumped Land in with the NSMB games because it's essenially NSMB in 3D; it tries to apply 2D Mario's trappings and structure to a 3D game. This works for a handheld, but for World it is an inherently limited approach as it's not taking advantage of the possibilities a 3D Mario on a console like the Wii U offers.

It's not going to fall short because it's not Galaxy, it's going to fall short because based on what we've seen so far it seems generic, cheap, unambitious and lazy.

I think you're wrong in some aspects - but right in others. If it's going to "all short because based on what we've seen so far it seems generic, cheap, unambitious and lazy", then why didn't NSMWii fall short as well? That's essentially a copy/paste from the DS title, isn't it? This is the EXACT same situation, only we had already gotten our Galaxy before we got NSMBWii (that and the fact that we hadn't seen a 2D Mario on a home console for 20 years). This game would not be considered lazy and unambitious had we gotten a "proper" 3D Mario beforehand.

There's your answer. ;)

By contrast, this will be the 4th Mario platformer in 2 years.

Didn't really think of it before... but seems kind of obvious that the Wii U 3D Mario game will sell less than any before it. Unless that Mario Sunshine game on Gamecube wont be putting up much of a fight.

Even tought WiiU pricing right now is terrible I'd say this will beat at least Mario Sunshine. You could have said the same thing with NSMBW, it looked like a lazy port of the handled version and still, thanks to the add of multiplayer (imo) it sold even more. Since the WiiU has a terrible pricing atm I think SM3DW lifetime sales will set somewere between Sunshine and SM3DL sales, otherwise it would have sold more than the 3DS one.
