I agree with Reggie. The better the game the more likely you are to keep it in your collection.

But Nintendo now takes that stance because is not the market leader and has little 3rd party support. Back in the NES and SNES days Nintendo actually fought hard against the Game Rental Industry, they sued Blockbuster but lost at the end, although they did win the part about not being able to get the game booklet.

Uhm, Nintendo is leading both the 7th AND 8th gen.

Really?? Wii has only 40% of the Market and WiiU's market share at this point is irrelevant.  Handheld market yes, but the "used games" argument is most relevant to the console market.

Back in the NES/SNES days Nintendo was ALL AGAINST rental and used games.

Yet you still had Blockbuster carrying NES and SNES games back in the day.

Yes, because Nintendo lost the lawsuit.  The only part of the lawsuit Nintendo won was that Blockbuster could not include the game manual with the rental.

I was just wondering...  Do rental places have to pay more for the games or movie since they make a lot of money renting them out or do they just buy them at regular price?

I think they just buy them at regular price. The idea was that once you own something you can do whatever you want with it. At least that was the case with physical games. Nowadays with digital games you only own a license so there are limits to what you can do.

It depends.

For movies the big rental chains have agreement with the movie studios ( well Blockbuster did), that is how they are able to get so many copies of newly released movies.( and in exchange the studios make money on rentals)

For games I do not believe there is any agreement, they buy games at regular price( which probably isn't the same price you and me pay, most likely they purchase from distributors)  but publisher do not make any money on rentals.

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Really. Whatever way you try to spin it, that marketshare is bigger than Sony's or Microsofts. So they are leading the market.

I don't care about the rest of your statement.

There is no spin.  Maybe you are blind-sighted.  Remember that Reggie's statement is meant to apply to 3rd parties concern over the "used games" market and how it affects their profitability.  If you are a 3rd party developer the market is divided in 2 whenever you decide to develop a game.  Nintendo or PS/Xbox.

I agree with Reggie though.  Used games are best controlled by providing great content and replayability.

The rest of my argument goes more to point out that when you have a lot of 3rd parties developing on your platform, there is a need to protect their interests.  MS has to please their developers and address their concern.  Nintendo did the same back when it had a large amount of 3rd parties developers.

Technically, the Wii still leads in hardware sales and when it comes to software, Nintendo is still one of the top 3 software publishers worldwide, easily #1 in their own country of Japan and has more million selling games then any other video game company. It is no doubt arrogant to say it, but Nintendo isn't wrong, they have had their portables and the Wii titles heavily pirated but they still come through making profits.

Or maybe Nintendo games don't get traded in because they lack any third party games.

people i know who own Mario bros or Mario kart are families who only own 4 or 5 games all gen. Of course some hardcore players own and trade on Nintendo consoles but with the wii many casual families owned next to nothing and probably have no idea about trading in. My sister in law has a wii and 5 games. The same games she had 2 years ago. She doesn't play them anymore but has never traded in her life.

xbox gamers and ps gamers demographic are much more into trading for the next big blockbuster.

Nintendo it has nothing to do with quality. Its got to do with your recent demographic.

Let's get some perspective.  How did the topic come up? Mostly due to MS introduction to certain restrictions for used games.  Also Sony will alow 3rd parties to restrict their software if they so desire.  So who is pushing for these restrictions?  3rd party developers.  Even more specific, western developers.

To them , there are basically two choices.  They can either develop for Nintendo or for the HD twins. That is how they divide the market.

Those who decide to develop for Sony and MS are more vulnerable to lose profits by the sale and trade of used games. They are the ones pushing for the restrictions.

Those that decide to develop for Nintendo are partially safe from such loss as the demographics are different.

Nintendo itself is safe because of the demographic that owns the system as well as the replayability of its own games.

But when Nintendo was in the position Sony and MS are in right now (back in the NES/SNES days), then Nintendo did try to put a stop to the game rentals.

I've still got a stack of Gamecube games I play every so often. I pretty much never sell my Nintendo games. (I can't even tell you how many times I've 100% Pikmin 3.)
