That's  definite opposite view. But Sony doesn't have the history of a device with an initial failure rate of over 30%.

They are just being extra cautious I don't see a problem with that. Also the first redesign due to die shrink should be pretty dramatic.



Your assumptions are reasonable and can be true. Heat issues changes a project design.

The only issue for is "why the power brick outside the box?".

The back of the PS4 is essentially a vent. It also looks like there are vents in the middle of the console, where the split happens.

Can see the side vents in the high res images, and the back vents are pretty hefty.

Having an external power brick actually reduces its chance of overheating.  Also it shouldn't be too big but that all depends on how much power it uses.  They got progessively smaller on the 360 I'm curious to see the size of the brick on the just anounced 360 redesign.

I think I never have a console with bricks.. I don't remember if PS1 and PS2 had.

The fact Sony not used a brink with PS4 can means the console have a really good controls over the heat issues.



Id add whats more telling, is that they have still yet to release the official spec, which could mean there still making the decision on the clock speed. Or worse they have made the decision to lower it and they don't want the public knowing before launch.

Perhaps because if you get a spike in power you can easily replace it, obviously it reduces heat in the box and save space on your shelf too.  It means in future revisions its also easy to manufacture newer power boards as you're not having to take into account what effect it will have on the rest of a consoles internals.  It can also mean you need less shielding in your device to stop the PSU interfering.  There are lots of reasons to put a external PSU.  The real question is what's the point engineering a internal PSU given the potential negatives?

I never have trouble with internal PSU and I never heard cases too... most issues was always with disc-reader.
