Forums - Sony - Sony clarify PS4 stance on used games – “PlayStation 4 does not enforce DRM restrictions”

SCE UK boss Fergal Gara has clarified PS4‘s DRM message stating: “PlayStation 4 does not enforce any DRM restriction around used games”. However, like the PS3, if third party publishers want to use DRM to charge for resale of games, “that’s in their hands really”.

Sony clarify PS4 stance on used games

Speaking at E3 Gara says, “In short, there’s no change. ‘No change’ was [the message] received extremely well. PlayStation 4 does not enforce any DRM restriction around used games”. That’s not say DRM restrictions aren’t possible he explains. “As is the case with PS3, for example, if a third party publisher was to decide that use of their servers or a second use of a disc was to require some fee… That’s in their hands really”.

It’s that ‘potential DRM’ that lead to some muddiness following Sony’s E3 conference agrees Gara, ”I think that’s the confusion that emerged”. To clarify though he reiterates: “There’s no systematic feature that PlayStation 4 enforces DRM. So I’m pretty damn confident that it doesn’t muddy the waters or change the announcement at all. I think it was just expanded upon a little bit more, possibly picked up a little bit more negatively and raised a few questions”.

Like I said in my thread where people are overreacting cause Edge talked to some developers not Sony about it..

I don't think 3rd party publishers will make 1 locked down version and the other one open..It's a Pretty simple decision there Publishing wise: make them both locked down..

If the reception for DRM is bad enough for publishers to change their mind, as it's enforces on xbox, they could not change it, unlike PS4

That's the difference to me.

Plus, japanese publishers has never been as much on DRM than american ones. Not all publishers want always on DRMs, and might see it as a bad thing on ONE

I hope this is the final. I can deal with things like Online Passes because every game that I purchase is always brand new, I never buy used games. That being said, I use gamefly constantly and I trade games with friends from time to time. I don't mind missing out on the online aspect of certain games so long as the single player is untouched.

I really hope this is the final word on this issue on the PS4.

This.

Since the formation of "HD twins" group, stuff or features from 3rd party developers got standarised over those two platfoms. Meaning if one platform gets it, the other also.

It's what I, and most people, I think, expected. I never once thought that Sony would force publishers to stop using online passes. Personally, I don't even mind online passes, as I think accessing a server and a network are aspects that go beyond simply purchasing a disc.

That being said, I think online passes are on their way out and micro-transactions are on their way in.

I dont agree, reading between the lines I dont think they'll have to enforce DRM for Xbone as MS will do it all for them so from a development / server cost stance they'll be creating DRM for only the PS4 if they choose to include it for that platform.
